Any Good Methods For Ending Up With A Mod-able Xbox?
« on: October 09, 2007, 12:08:00 PM »

Hey guys, first time poster.

I've got a lot of experience cross-flashing, and bios hacking in the pc world, but even to me, some of the extreme measures required to flash some certain drives (as explained in the "Hacking XBOX360 for Dummies" pdf) makes me nervous.

I saw that some drives require you to actually de-solder parts of the drive, or solder transistors onto the pins, and i really don't want to get into that, especially with a BRAND NEW system.......

I really don't want to open the system at all, unless i know the flashing is going to be pretty straight-forward, and it makes me nervous that the newer samsungs have firmware lockout, but look exactly like the old samsungs until you open the case, etc........

Anyways, if i said i wanted to buy an XBOX in the next few days, for the sole purpose of being able to flash the firmware, what is my safest model to buy?

A new core system?  The new premium with HDMI?  The old premium without HDMI (BB still has them)?  The 360 elite? (riskiest of all, since it is a mail-order (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) )  Or go to the record exchange and buy a used one?

Which systems are the easiest to mod?  Is there even a rhyme or reason to which systems end  up with which drives?

I know i'm probably worrying too much, but i don't want to break the seal, and not be able to return the system if i'm unable to mod it!   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

Hmm did you know if you searched you would find the answers to all the questions you're asking? Yeah, give that a try.

Dam dude, instead of just telling him to search, why not give him a few "terms" to search for?

I, myself was wondering the same question.  But what do you search for?  "new 360 with TS-28"?  "current production with TS-28"?

Really they are all guaranteed moddable now.  You'll probably never find a new Samsung again, but they're the easiest mods.  Hitachis are rare but can be modded with a chip (yuck).  BenQ is straightforward to extract the key and spoof to an eBay Samsung, and iXtreme for BenQ is right around the corner.  So no matter what drive you get, you're not in the weeds.
