Using The 79passkey On Multiple Drives
« on: October 08, 2007, 04:55:00 PM »

The 79Passkey uses a ZIF (Zero Incertion Force) Socket that you solder to the drive.  You then connect the chip to the drive with a flat cable (FFC).

Does anyone know a site that sells these ZIF Sockets?  Having multiple ZIF sockets would make it al ot easier to  use the pass key to mod multiple drives

Have you modded a 79 drive yet i personally have yet to use the zif socket as its more soldering for nothing. my opinion solder the 7 wires and move on leave wires attached and just tape them up after so if you need to reattch the passkey dont have to solder again. thats my opinion. But no I dont any place for the zif sockets.

Once you get the hang of it, installing one of those sockets only takes a couple of seconds.

I have the ribbon and header kits you need for the passkey

$3 ea plus shipping

I agree the header kits are not that well and wires are the preferred method

In the UK you can buy them from RS.  Worth buying a few ribbons as well as the sockets, as being in a ZIF socket whilst it's being soldered doesn't do them much good.

458-9125 are the ribbons, 98p+VAT each, sold in multiples of 5 (so £4.90+VAT=£5.76 per pack)
623-6788 are the sockets, 88.1p+VAT each, sold in multiples of 5 (so £8.81+VAT=£10.35 per pack)

For those who want to improve their soldering of these sockets, check out the video clips at http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/present.php?p=SMD-HowTo-7, I couldn't get on with solder wick at all before I watched these, the techniques used are well worth learning!
