Sil3112 & Hitachi V0078fk Drive
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:59:00 AM »

Hey guys,

I have an nForce2 mobo with integrated sil3112 chipset. I also have a Xbox 360 with a Hitachi v0078FK drive.

I have read a lot on the topic and all I read is that flashing a 0078FK with a sil3112 is a NO GO!

I still was curious, so I put my drive in modeb an started raw dumping the firmware using FW toolbox 4.0 by Maximus. To my surprise the checksum was fine every time I  dumped the firmware.

So here is my Q : Now that the checksum validates, is it ok to flash the drive using the sil3112 chipset?

I just wanted to report success on the firmware upgrade. So it is possible to read and flash a 0078fk drive with a sil3112 chip.

List of hard and software:

Asus A7N8X2.0 deluxe motherboard with sil3112ACT144 SATALink chip.(BIOS v1007, sil drivers v1.0.0.22)

Xbox 360 with Hitachi GDR-3120L 0078fk ODD.

Slax 2 to put drive in Modeb

Firmware Toolbox v4.5 for raw dumping, hacking & uploading firmware.

Make sure your firmware dump checksum validates! (if not: don't proceed)
Also make sure that there is no absurd amount of differences during the differential read of the differential flash! (Mine had  9)

I also would like to note that it is profoundly stupid to do this when all tutorials tell you not to, but hey...it worked for me  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Well done.  And before anyone else flames him 'cos "I tried it because you said it worked and now I've bricked my drive", he TESTED THIS.  SEVERAL TIMES.  BEFORE FLASHING.  Because that's the safe and sensible thing to do.

Just because his combination of drive/OS/motherboard/CPU/kitchen sink works perfectly, it doesn't mean that the same applies to everyone.  Let's be careful out there! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

i have a pci sil3112 card and i've NEVER had any luck reading or flashing to an hitatchi drive no matter what ver it was. (never bricked one either tho)  even using my pci VT6421 that i bought for my for my sammy didn't work. i've always had to use my friends computer to do it on

just curious what IS a proven card that works with the hitatchi's?

My pci SIL3112 works great for v40-59 but freezes in windows when trying a v78.  My VIA also works fine with all versions, except some v59s I couldnt get it to function properly.
