Benq Flash\reading Chipset Problem. Please Help.
« on: October 04, 2007, 03:33:00 PM »

Hello, I have the Benq Drive for my xbox 360 and i just got the ixtreme frim for it but i ran into a problem.

I have a Hp pavilion a1340n PC and i have flashed both Hitachi and Samsung MS28 drives and had no problem.

I put the little switch to the points that i was supposed to and i tryed both soldering places. (one on back and one under white stuff) But when I go eather into the dosflash (floppy) version and desktop program version, it gives me a err of "Unknown Chip Set." I bought a VIA RAID for my ms 28 drive and it worked but this drive wont work for nothing.

When im in the desktop program it finds it and it even makes the "Read Flash" button highlighted, But when i press i get the Unknown flash chip err. Is there a way to make it compatible with my computer?

PLEASE HELP,
THANK YOU.

Make your cuts across the traces a bit deeper. Seems a lot of people I read about with a problem of the benq not dumping...it's fixed by cutting a little deeper.

edit:

Also, make sure you have the switch in the correct position. Took me a couple tries to figure out which was on and off. After that, dumped 5 times no problem.

What chip is the actual f\w stored on so i know not to damage it so if i do mess up the green card i can put the f\w  on a new drive.

is it this on in the center of the picture?

If I read your first post right you say you have ixtreme you are trying to flash to your benQ? lol sorry that is not possible since there is not hacked firmware yet available for the benq.

So then I am assuming you are trying to extract the firmware from your BenQ so you can spoof a Samaung to work in your BenQ 360 right?

The VIA chipset I use to flash Samsung drives does not work when I extract firmware from BenQ drives. But it works like a charm in my Intel chipset PC.

Using my VIA one I get the same error you get. Use a different SATA chipset and it should work fine if you cut the traces right and using the one off switch the right way. Also you can use an ohm meter to make sure the traces are cut all the way.

in my intel one i had a hell of a time, finally got it after 10 mins of timing the wire trick differently,
the ich5 always makes flashing fun.

Your only choice is to used a dremel (or another method) to expose where the leg was and solder a wire to connect it to the appropriated pad on the pcb.  If you're not comfortable, and before you mess it up more, you might want to send it out to someone.

As for the replacement MX chip, you can find them online.  You can probably get a sample from somewhere if you're lucky.  I had a friend who works for an manufacturer order me a few, since i broke a leg off of mine as well (removed it a few too many times (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ).

I am having trouble reading my benq drive as well. I am at expert level for soldering so its nothing to do with my switch install and trace cut is mint. I have not done much troubleshooting yet on my attempts to read thru SATA but i was wondering if it is the small 8 pin MX chip that holds the DVD key and is it possible to read this chip with a eprom programmer if i carefully remove it from the PCB ?

Any tutorials or links that show how this is done would be great.

I recently recovered the key from a dead 0079FL for someone and it was a breeze to just read the damn chip directly and not mess around.

It sure is.  It just needs to support the MX25, which is 5V.  They're quite expensive to buy but if you have on available to you, and are good at soldering, it should be a breeze.

Yo thanks Caster, I will try that, but just one thing.
If i heat the chip to attach a wire to the remaing piece of leg, will the soilder spred in to the chip, welding it solid. (messing it up?)

Thanks
