I'm having the same problem. I'm using a CD to boot into DOS, but all the files required are on my hard drive so I'm running mtkflash from C:

I've just read that DOS can't write to NTFS file systems, so make sure you're using NTFS4DOS to overcome this, and not a generic DOS bootdisk. Or you could try creating a small FAT32 partition on your hard drive to use for the files.

Also try booting from and/or backing up the firmware to a floppy disk or USB drive. I'm using a CD because I don't have a floppy drive and I don't think my motherboard will let me boot from USB. But these are the things I'll be trying to do next and I'll post my results here.

Alright! Just got it to work! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

This is my set up:

2 x 250gb SATA hard drives
1 x SATA DVD-RW
1 x IDE DVD-RW
Intel ICH7 SATA Storage Controller (Onboard)
VIA VT6421 RAID Controller (PCI SATA adapter)

Obviously I can't flash an MS25 with my onboard SATA, wrong chipset, so I bought a VIA VT6421 PCI card. Because I don't have a floppy drive or USB drive I was trying to get the flashing to work by storing the files on one of my hard drives and booting NTFS4DOS. Despite all of my attempts using many different combinations I couldn't get it to work at all.

However - I borrowed a USB drive and it worked first time! Just unplugged both hard drives and DVD drives, booted from and stored files on the USB drive, which I set up using Xtreme Boot Maker.
So just follow myfranco's guide here:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=573693

My advice? Save yourself the stress of trying to get it to work from CD/HD and just buy a cheap USB drive! It's the most sure way. Now I'm off to attempt this with an MS28...
