people don't scratch your dvd player with soldering and wires en switches
just buy a via card and you can do this without the vcc trick and soldering!!
works just fine!!

read the firmware
erase the firmware
and write the firmware

works great!!!

agreed.
i ordered a Rosewill RC-212 PCI SATA card for $20 and it is way worth paying that then risking ruining my 360.
i hope, i've never done this before.
is that going to work, the via card?
i won't have to cut or solder anything?

Hey everybody im new to this stuff but last night i decided after much research to try and mod my 360. I did the method 2 in the guide, it was super simple, all i did was grabbed a blow dryer on max heat low speed and waved it around the epoxy for about 60 seconds, then grabbed a knife laying around and poked the epoxy and it came right off, i had to reheat it a few times but took about 3-4 min. to clear the areas i needed. then i took the same knife and cut the trace right between the middle legs of the chip, grabbed two long wires, soldered them to the points, taped them, put the drive back together, left the wires hanging, hooked up the power cable from the 360 to the drive , plugged a sata cable in, got all the necessary files onto my pen drive, turned the computer off, unplugged every sata cable, and the ide cable, turned the computer back on with the pen drive plugged in, it booted into dos, then i hooked up my 360 dvd drive to the motherboard in SATA 1 position, turned my 360 on, then twisted the wires together, typed dosflash, and BOOM, it came up as the only drive installed, i read it went to windows made my hacked firmware, put it on the drive, did all that stuff again, wrote my new firmware to the drive, and DONE. No i don't know about anyone else but i have to leave those wires twisted together of else i get an error 65 (bad firmware error) comes up when turning it on, anyone else have that problem? Other than having to do that im waiting for my new DVD DL's to arrive and Assassins creed to finish DL

If you want to spend money and wait for the card to come in the mail be my guess but for me, i didn't spend a dime and the whole process maybe took a half hour..... Up to you.....

Yes please.. Iv just been through all the trouble soldering the 2 wires to the DVD.. and now i have downloaded DosFlash and in the readme file it says:

QUOTE

Soft Flashing the BenQ in Windows XP with a VIA card or NForce motherboard and DosFlash32
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- connect a separate power supply unit to the BenQ, don't turn it on yet (can be XBOX360 or
  Xecuter Connectivity Kit)
- don't use the Xecuter Kit to power the drive with the same psu as your computer, cause we
need to power the drive off and on during soft flashing
- cold reboot or reset the computer
- turn on the BenQ psu when you are in Windows XP
- start DosFlash32
- DosFlash32 will ask you if you wanna resend the mtk vendor intro cmd, press Yes
- turn off the BenQ psu and wait 2 or more seconds
- turn on the BenQ psu, the DosFlash32 dialog should show up
- the flash should be recognized by DosFlash32
- you can now read, write or erase the flash
- you should be able to do the flashing more than one time in Windows, only do the power
  off/on trick again
- if the ports are scanned there is the possibility that you'll get the resend question for
other drives like a NEC, this is because the NEC has no MTK chip and returns a bad status,
if you know the NEC is at that port you should press No and press Yes only if the port of
the BenQ is shown or simply disconnect the NEC

Nothing about the switch.. A updated tutorial would be nice! ..

Hey fellow forum members...
here's one from a newbie:  my son and I were hooking up the new hdtv... well, then the xbox360 fell.

my son caught it, though it apparently was jarred enough that the dvd no longer functions properly.

I have the unit open.  It's the benq drive.

here's the question:  if I replace the benq drive with another benq drive, must I still flash it?

if so, what is the best method to flash the unit?  Or is there any hopes of re-aligning the laser mechanism?

thank you so very much for reading this...

I figured I'd post this for all the newbs like me.  I have spent a day and a half trying to flash my BenQ drive.  This thread is very old and should be replaced with the tutorial I will link to in this post.  You DO NOT need to solder anything anymore....period.  The DosFlash32 proggie did not work for me at all.  I have 2 comps, both with VIA chips and both could not read the BenQ firmware while in Windows.  Both would freeze my comp even with the latest Via drivers.

I used the BenQ section of the tutorial located here:  http://www.360mods.n...al/Textbook.pdf

I followed the instructions and made a bootable thumb drive and it read the BenQ firmware and wrote the hacked Ixtreme 1.4 firmware using iPrep with no problem what so ever.

Follow the tut and you're good as gold.  Burned and played 2 backups flawlessly so far.

Hi Guys just wanted you to know that me and a friend with a knowledge of PCB's soldering and electronics have come up with a way of making method1 reversable without actually soldering more than four wires and a switch.

This means that you will effectively have an on/off mode for flashing and a normal mode for playing when the console is being used normally.

We are hoping to incorporate this into with something like the blaster360 or Xeno topgear only it will have the above mentioned switch.

Its a work in progress but we should hopefully have a working model soon.  I have a brand new elite console unfortunately it does not have the BenQ drive. Just the Hitachi LG 79FK (I am assuming it is a 79FK because it has not been opened seal intact also).

This means I need to swap it in order to get this tut out there.  We have already successfully modified and flashed 4 BenQ drives.

If anyone out there is willing to do this then it would be most helpful to the cause.  Once we have got a working model we will get pictures along with a tutorial out there and start working on something to make it easier for those without soldering skills.

It will need to be a UK/PAL model swap like for like.

Thanks

Hi guys I have a questions, I have a BenQ drive and I recently tried to make a backup of my Assassins Creed, its the only backup I have that we made it at my friends house. He has the pc dvd drive so he popped in original and we made the ISO and check with the "mulleter" or something that it said its properly patch. Anyways I flashed the BenQ drive with the latest 1.4 bios and 12x verison with stealth. Now my only prob is that the reading is smooth but there is another sound on top of reading. Its not a bad sound but the reading is not as smooth as the original or the reading in the samsung drive that my friend has.

We used Verbatim dual layers, can anyone recommend what speed we should burn the games at or should we use a more slower bios for smoother reading, there is no pot tweaking nessasary as the game works fine and works without any trouble. My friend's xbox has a samsung and his drive reads normally just like original so I am just looking for a smoother solution.

Thanks for reading.

So let me get this straight.

You need EITHER of the following

-A VIA chipset or PCI SATA card with a VIA chipset
-Do the soldering mod

Right? I dont need to do both, correct?

I currently don't have a VIA chipset. Do you recommend doing the solder mod or dropping $20 on a VIA pci card?

If you havent worked on pcbs before, i wouldnt recommend the solder solution.  Just invest $20 in a VIA PCI card and flash your friends drive to make up the $20... wink.gif

Hey Caster, thanks alot for the help!

Any recommendations on which SATA VIA card to get? Theres a bunch of them online, but does it matter which card it is as long as it has a VIA chipset?

If you're in the US, look on newegg.  They should have a SYBA PCI card that has a VIA6421 chipset.

I found this thread and want to thank EVERYONE for all the valuable information. I have read all the tutorials you guys have written up.  I see that it says WinXP.  Will it make a difference if I am running Vista?
Just curious b/c i'm about to buy the SATA PCI card and want to know if i'll kill my system.

Thanks in advnace
