I'm following the tutorial to flash a 78FK...

I can boot Slax 2.1 without issue, and the drive enters ModeB and spins up fine, and I can reboot, BUT, with the drive attached, I get stopped every time during bootup at a linux screen indicating that if I want to partition the drive, etc, etc.

If I remove the sata cable, the drive leaves ModeB, so when I get into windows the drive isn't present.

Is there a trick to booting a PC with a Hitachi attached?

after you boot with slax, press ctl alt del and take the slax cd out, you dont want to leave it in cause slax will run again and you only need it to run once.

Also when slax is loading, open the dvd drive and put a game or movie in it.

I appreciate the suggestions.  Here's where I'm at...

After booting through Slax (disc in drive, as you suggested), I can either use the 'reboot' command, or ctr-alt-del... either way Linux ejects the disc, which I remove.

On reboot, I get to the screen where my bios searches for RAID.  On this screen is this text:

"Scan for Raid.
No Raid.

CTRL0 Chn10 Master HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR3120L   - SATAPI Mode

Press <TAB> Key Into User Window

If you want to install Linux default partition raid driver, please do not use DPROM creation operation. "

I cannot get past this screen.  TAB does nothing, nor does any key combination I can think of.  I get the impression that my system doesn't agree with having the 3120 attached during boot, but I cannot remove it without losing ModeB.

Preciate any suggestions.

Have you tried turning your raid off?

In most the posts here they recommend turning raid off as a starter - I'm clutching at straws here!!

Never had this before, though I've seen the symptom posted a couple times.

Now I have two MS replacement consoles here that arrived yesterday... both TS943's.  One is an ms25, the other an ms28.

In both cases, the consoles worked when dropped off.  Now, after flashing (both with Ix 1.2), the trays will not stay shut.  Oh, they close, for about 3 seconds... then the 'Game' tab on the dashboard changes to "Opening", and out she comes.

Of note... if I power down the consoles, the tray will close, and then open again before the fan finally shuts off.  Bugger me!  I end up powering off, and then as soon as the tray closes, yank out the power cord.

I've returned both back to their orig.bin's, but no such luck... they still eject constantly.  And since the trays won't stay shut, I cannot confirm whether originals or copies work.

Anyone experienced something like that?  I'd appreciate any thoughts.

I hear ya... I checked that too.  Raid is off.  Any other ideas?

Sounds like it's still in modeB have you tried shutting the tray then right as it shuts hit eject again and see if it stays in?

Have you tried just pressing eject on 360 when it gets stuck on that screen ?

Take the top drive cover off of one of the dvd drives and check that the centre magnet is still in it's locator in the centre of the drive spindle.It's a round metallic disc about a half inch across that breaks away from the centre spindle and sticks to the upper lid.
This prevents the carriage assembly from lifting up to the correct height when the tray slides all the way in.
Because the carriage then jams the unit automatically spits the drive tray back out.
If it has come away just superglue it back into the drive's centre spindle being careful not to use excessive glue or you will glue the spindle and stop it rotating   .

I have seen this on my own console.
I am not sure that this is the problem that you have (it's very strange that you are getting after a flash but may just be a coincidence) but it's definately worth looking at.

There is one other method.Try Unplugging power cable while the tray is out.
2nd method when you press eject button,while the tray is closing,double press the eject method.This method works for hitachis but can work for you too.

Oh... my... god!  That it could be that simple.  Dayum.

The EJECT idea worked.  I wouldn't have thought it possible, and yet, first try.

Hey Pickey... nope, they're both okay in that respect.  Magnets are fine.  Good thought, though.

Francy... neither made a difference.

Here's something interesting... with the covers off (but a disc sitting in tray), I fired up both consoles.  When the tray closes, the laser fires up, but discs do not spin.  Then, after 3-4 seconds, it ejects.

Perhaps the culprit is the lack of spinning.  Is there anything checkable and/or configurable in that regard?

I had read about this happening, and laughed... I thought, dayum, that's crappy timing.

And guess what... just happened to me, while flashing an ms28. Go figure.  Right in the middle of flashing the third sector... toast.

I have the orig.bin and the ixtreme1.2 on both a usb key, and a floppy.  The issue is that the drive refuses to flash.  Using the bad flash method, with everything from 1 second delay, to 15.  Nothing.

If this is in a tutorial somewhere, I couldn't find it, and would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions.  Can a bricked drive like this be saved?

If badflash isn't working you can try flashing without restarting the console at the device selection, just push the number next to Xtreme Pri Master and see if it resumes the flash where it left off.  If that doesn't work you can get another sata device plug it in to the primary sata port and power it on, go through the flashing process and when you get to the device selection screen power off the sata device & swap with the 360 drive, press the number next to Xtreme Pri Master, and power on the 360.

Is the eject button reassembled in the case correctly and not held in 100% of the time.
