Just get a compatible PCI SATA card. Firmware modchips are lame.

There's little point in having dual firmwares anymore because the 360 will log your activities even if you're offline, so you're not any safer when playing backups just because you're not using them to play online.  To answer your question, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do what you're saying.

Of course you can by one online - find out where to get the cheapest compatible card (don't forget to factor in tax and shipping) - then go to a store that sells VISA gift debit cards, and buy one for that amount. Use that card to pay for said product online. I got my VIA6421 off tigerdirect.com for $10 when C4e first started showing his work.
