I tried restoring my 78 in this way (without the original FW).
How many flash sectors were listed in the dialog box before you start the flashing?
Was there many sectors or just 8 to 12 sectors?
The reason is, because there is at least four v78 drives, maybe more.
You need to use the original v78 firmware which has the key at the same location as your drive,
otherwise you are BRICKed.
As per my other posts regarding this problem, here is the info you need to know:

You can only use an original v78 drive which is from the same type of v78 drive.
You need to make sure your friend's original v78 firmware
has the key at the same offset as your already flashed v78 drive.
Read back your flashed v78 drive, and see at what position the key is stored at,
currently I know of four v78 drives, >4B00 , >4C30, >4D20, >4E10
Then load in your friends original v78 firmware, and see at what position the key is stored at,
if it is the same as your drive (location of key), then you can safely use this firmware to
restore your drive (after replacing it with your key), and then re-smart hack it, and update your drive.
There is also a new Toolbox v3.2 in the testing stage to help all those people that have deleted
their original firmware (something no one should do).
But wish to upgrade their drive and currently can't restore it because of that problem.
The new feature is called "Recover Lost Original Bin" -- It will come in handy and will be out soon.
