I too had this. Sometimes VIA 6421 works, sometimes not (depending on drive (one hitachi 46 worked, another 46 didn't)). I use a SIL3112 for Hitachis now and it always works.

I had the same thing with a Via 6421 and an 047. Ended up using the onboard SATA in another computer to read the drive.

Then I switch the PCI card (I use the VIA for Samsung ms25 & 28 and Hitachi 78, for the other Hitachis I use the SIL3112).

mMaximus is warning you NOT to use SATA cards that use the SIL chipsets:

I quote his latest FWToolBox v4.6:

"RAWDUMP does not work fine with SIL chipsets yet, be aware of use
the validate checksum feature to avoid bad dumps and bricks. We
will be working on SIL chipsets later."

what is the cheapest (non-SIL based SATA CARDS) that are proven to work reliably with this stubborn hitachi 78/79 drives?

and NO NOT the VIA-6421 or VIA3249 cards...

what is another SATA card option that is a proven rock solid flasher for these  newer 78/79 Hitachis (no SIL chips)?
