Right I have to buy a new motherboard to fix my 3 red lights of death issue so I need some help on how to insert the key that comes with it.

The key is that of an Hitachi 78Fk and my drive is a Hitachi 47DH. I assum that the difference in rom versions makes no difference?

I have looked at tutorials on here but most are based on extracting it from one drive and putting it into another and not what to do with a key that come son the disc. I am yet to know what format the key comes in -  a .bin file or the actual key itself in a notepad document or something. I would like to know how it would be done either way?

My current drive is already hacked with GaryOPA's latest flash - so I guess I should restore my drive.

If so, how do I go about putting the key im given into the hacked firmware ready to flash back on the drive?

Or can I inject the key straight onto the hacked firmware without restoring?

Please reply! I have purchased the motherboard now and Im 99.9% sure this is fine.

I am assuming here that your new MB was associated to a v78 and that your drive is a v47 (just in case I swapped it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

There might be a better way to do this, you will need one of the guys doing a lot of flashing to confirm.

You can look at Hitachi Key Insertion Tutorial or look at the following

-Restore your hitachi first
-Get the FW 2.3S, extract the FW you need like 47_23s.bin from FWPACK.RAR (if your hitachi is a 47 and you want a 2.3s installed on it) and rename to hitachi.bin
-Open your v78 fw/key file with FW toolbox 3.0 and get the key (ctrl-c)
-Open the hitachi.bin and 1) put the key in (ctrl-v) and hit Replace,  2) Spoof as V78
(You can open it with a hex editor to be sure the key is at position 4F00)
-Flash using FWtoolbox (tool/Direct drive flash)

all that to be confirmed, just some ideas,

Many thanks. Your assumption is right  

If someone could confirm the above instructions it would be great.

Do I need to spoof the drive? As far as I know, I don't, because its the key that is part of the pair and Im unaware as to if information on the original rom version is kept on the motherboard.

you need to spoof such that your MB still sees the same Drive version, so you need to spoof it to v78.

Really? I really never thought the motherboard matches the dirve version. I always thought it was just th ekey (and the model - toshiba-smasung or hitachi) but not rom version. I will spoof anyway - dont do no harm.

I found a bit more info for you (was looking at the wrong place   ).
Two posts in the  FW toolbox 3.0 thread.
1) The first by textbook describes the various step to flashing the v78. I guess after you entered the key and spoofed the firmware, it would continue from step 12 in order to encrypt and flash for a v47.
2) Second is from Garyopa where he says that you must leave a game disk in if using the internal flasher of FW toolbox

A different approach to consider could be to first flash your v47 drive with latest FW (which I believe you say is already done), then you could just use the Flash Keys & String data (Spoof) to adapt the drive to the new MB. it might be simpler since the fw would already by in.??



As you may be aware the V78 may have his key in a different location than previous hitachi v47, so you need to be careful.
I know I may bring you more questions than clear direction, Hope someone that has done this in the past will be able to confirm the best approach. still, hope it helps.

By the way I am in the same boat = 3 red lights, I have to replace my MB . The new one was on a samsung so it will be a different task.

its easy, there is a guide on here, and it works perfect, i swapped a 47dj for a 78fk drive, insearted the new, and works fine, i applied the firmware key and spoofed data.

What firmware did you modify? What were oyur exact steps?

sosotiit, many thanks for oyur help! Im in a much better order than I was in before.

I will list what steps I tihnk I should take to make all this as easy as possible:

1. First dump the current hacked firmware from my hitachi drive.
2. Get the key and copy and paste it into the box and click replace key.
3. Go to Tools --> Spoof firmware.
4. Click the 78FK option and make sure the 'master checksum' part is checked.
5. Click apply spoof.
6. Generate encrypted file <---- Is this necessary? I guess it creates a backup of your new firmware.
7. Flash keys.
8. Flash string ID.

The main thing im struggling to decide on is if I should restore first. Obviously if I do the process is completely different.

What should I do?

The encrypt is more than a backup, if you open it with and hex editor, you will see that all data has been modified (not sure of the transfer function to be honest).
I know it is needed if you take the approach of restoring and reflashing the entire firmware as we were originally discussing. My concern for you then is  since the FW is spoofed as v78, that the flash does not happen as required for a hitachi v47.

Now going with the approach of only inserting the new key and spoof data over an already flashed Drive, not sure either if encrytion is needed. I would be tempted to always work from a file that is encrypted for flashing to a Hitachi, but never tried this one  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) .

I assume you mean that the toolbox will flash it wrong as it sees it as a 78Fk or something along them lines. This is my worry too.

Will my xecuter connectivity kit actually work after sofing the drive as a 78FK cos it doesnt support the &*FK. I use this to put the dirve in modeb....

The insertion tutorial uses flashing via DOS - but likey ou said there might be different positions.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM ALL OF THIS - whith exact steps?!

1) Assuming you have already Restored your Drive and have the bin from the New Motherboard and Old Motherboard

2) Get your Drive recognized by windows.
3) Open Up Firmware Toolbox
Open Up Firmware in Firmware Toolbox

I've always chosen internal flasher + a DVD Movie (Spiderman 2   ) And it has always worked , And most Of my posts are mini tutorials  , I always write it from scratch. Want to make a few tutorials soon though.

so no need to encrypt prior to  the key and flash ID command.

also if you already have it flashed to 2.3s could we do the following?
Key/Legend
78FK Related = Firmware, Drive, New Motherboard
47DH Related = Current v47 Firmware , Drive, Old Motherboard = now.bin of last flash.
Follow the same tutorial without restoring at the start and without the Flash With GaryOpa'a V2.3 R2 in the middle?
So starting with the now.bin instead of original hitachi firmware is the same process, but we remove steps 1 and 10.

For future updates, I am assuming:
Start with  Current Firmware,
Spoof Firmware, Tools >> Spoof Firmware
Click, Hitachi GDR3120L ROM 0047 >> Apply Spoof
Flash Spoof Data, Tools >> Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only) >> Flash String ID (Spoof Data)
Choose Drive and the flasher, Then Click "Start Flashing"
You get your drive back as a V47 flashed drive, do the update as any v47.
reapply the spoof to v78 as per instruction above.

I adapted the Tut above (post 12) for those who wanted a more specific tut for replacing Samsung By Hitachi
The same picture are associated to each steps:

AS per comment above, next time you update your firmware, you must first unspoof the firmware.
