Cannot Get Hitachi 78 Into Mode B!
« on: February 08, 2007, 01:48:00 PM »

Ok, so I am trying the SLAX boot disc with this SATA card:
2 Port SATA Serial ATA PCI Controller Raid Card VT6421A
Ebay Auction
I boot the computer with the SATA card plugged into the Xbox and the xbox grounded just like the tutorial by textbook says, I don't get the "spinning disc" screen, but I get to the login screen, login, reboot, eject the disc and start it up again with the xbox still on. As windows boots up, I eject the drive a few times in and out as told.  It does not take two clicks to eject the drive, it does not auto eject when closed, and it does not show up in windows. I have updated my cards drivers, and I am using the internal SATA port on the card, and I think I am out of ideas at this point. I have just been doing this same process again and again as that has worked for some people, but I was wondering if there was another or better way? I was also getting a code 10 error on the SATA card through device manager originally, but that seems to have gone away with the updated drivers. Any ideas? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try the other port on the card.  I had an issue with mine where the primary port would not recognize the drive most times and would give a weird error sometimes.

Cilix - I do not have the cord to utilize the external port on the card, but I will be sure to pick one up quickly and give it a try.  Is there anything else that might be causing it?  I did get the via vt6421A which is a RAID/SATA card, does that make a difference?  Should I have gone with another card?  I will try getting a new cable, but is there a way to see as SLAX is booting up if there is some other error which might be causing this?  I used to get a Code 10 error with the card in device manager when the drive was hooked up, but that is gone now and once windows froze when I ejected the drive during the loading screen (that made me really happy because I figured something was happening!) but I cannot duplicate this scenario again.  Any ideas?

I don't use an external port either, the side of my case is open.  Make sure that you set the card to work in SATA, not RAID.  Try to reseat the card and if that doesnt work try a different slot on the board.

May seem like a silly suggestion but make sure the sata cable is properly plugged in. I found with mine that you really had to force it in.

scuba - not at all, mine wasn't plugged in right for quite a while.

Cilix - how can I tell what mode it is in?  I have gone to the website and it seems like this card is mostly for RAID and that SATA was an afterthought?

Via site

I will take a look at the BIOS and see if there is anything there about the card or the drive.  Thanks
