Hmmm. MS seems to be shipping out NEW PSUs, or so it seems. On my other 360's PSU, the version is 00 on the label under the PSU. On my new BenQ 360's PSU, it says Version 1.0. I'll have to compared the power requirements and whatnot to see if they are still the same power rating wise.

I've also noticed that on my Hitachi 0059DJ (manuf. date 5-24-2006) has a 3 prong plug in while my M28 (manf. date 11-10-2006) has a 2 prong plug with no ground.

I have a Sammy dated in September, I kind of wish I have a BenQ even though there's no mod.  I don't plan on modding mine anytime soon, but it's painful to hear the drive spinning like a tornado.  My original PS2 was also pretty loud and the laser died after just 1 year, we'll see how long this 360 will last.

I want to reiterate for everyone, that you WILL still hear the vicious spin of the new BenQ drive but it will be a tad quieter. What you will notice on a drastic level, is when the drive is pulling data off the disc.

As soon as I get another one of these, Im gonna rip it apart and dump the firmware.  Im getting a few more in the next few days, so well see if i get a winner.  If not, ill just spent $300 on a brand new one and just return it after Im finished with it.

Careful saying that, there are pricks on this board who'll report your post.  Apparently sending back an opened 360 is classed as fraud (whereas telling millions of customers that there's nothing wrong with their fire-risk consoles and in fact it's the power cord at fault, is not).

Funnily enough, the first person I saw wailing about that was xboxexpert, and look what happened to him!  I'm just waiting for the next one...

Today I went out to 4 different Best Buy's searching for a 360 with a manufacture date november or later. I went through over 100 Xbox 360's and NONE were November or later. The newest one was 10-19-06. EB games had a 12-13-06 one but I need that nice Best Buy warranty so if that HDMI 360 ever comes out my  360 might "break" on me. Has anyone had any luck at Best Buy? Or do you guys know of any stores that offer store credit of the product on their warranty? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Just buy one from Best Buys and the one you want from EB Games and return the Best Buys unit to EB Games for a refund in the next day or two.  happy.gif

I just got a new 360 a few hours ago at Best Buy that had a manufactuer date of 12-21-06. I was told by one of my friends that it could have the new drive in it.

As soon as I took the 360 out the box and plugged it up, I opened the tray and low & behold it had the new drive in it. I could tell that it was by how it had that round look to it like the Xbox 1 Thompson drive. That mofo was so quiet that you'd actually had to be really close to the 360 to hear the drive's activity.

My friend was so jealous that he wanted to trade and throw in $100 along with the offer. I couldn't refuse it. Plus I missed the old sound of the DVD Drive doing it's thing lol

Best chances of getting one of these is getting a 360 from a store that sells them like water (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) and not stores like Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc.

Is there a way to find out the read speed of the new BenQ drive?  I think the older drives are 12x, I wonder if the BenQ is 16x or 24x because it's so quiet.

I was wondering if anyone who had the BenQ VAD6038 drive had experienced any crashes or disc read errors? i know its probably a bit early to ask but i'm hopeing Microsoft have finally put a decent drive in the 360.  What would be interesting is if we could get footage of the new drives in action comparing the sound levels to the old drives.

I got a refund on my 360 because it was giving a few disc read errors and crashing, also sometimes a screen would show asking me to insert a disc when i already had one in, this wasn't to often but for the price i paid i expected a quality product and not to have issues in the 1st week of buying, just one error makes me paranoid whilst playing because it puts me on edge wondering if it will happen again, and if the problem will get worse.

It's a shame really because i believe the Xbox 360 is the best system around for games but is sadly let down by poor hardware, as soon as im satisfied that they fix any sytem problems and get 100% stable machines out there, i will definatly be buying another.

Ok, I have now been to 7 Best Buys and not one had anything newer than October 19th (10-19-06). This is driving me nuts! I found out that each best buy nation wide received 300 +/-  before Christmas and havn't got any since. I'm going to go to Target later today and if they have November or newer ones I'm just going to get one there and hope that their 2 year contract is similar to Best Buy's.

Everyone is after them because they are said to generate a lot less noise and read discs faster but as you said they cant be modded

I initially thought it was a Phillips but I have one of the prototype BenQ drives from March 2006. I'm not sure how the prototype will differ from the final product but I will try my luck at it.

And yes ppl, keep this topic on track.

Here some pics of the pcb and stuff
http://s133.photobuc...7/1337pig/benQ/

I tried dumping the f/w like an ms28 using the 10 sec method. Still haven't got anything. The only thing interesting I noticed is that when I hit Esc after the 10 sec method I get "Status 73 Should be 70", usually it says "Status 51 Should be 70".
