To me, MS is not trying to make a non-hackable drives ,just trying to find the most stable and reliable drives.I'm sure this drive will take even shorter than hitachi 78 to get hacked.

Weren't the Phillips drives in the original XBOX widely considered as just as good, if not better than the SAMSUNG 605B drives? It seemed like everyone was swearing by the Phillips drive back in the day, and if I recall...they were also VERY quiet.

Yeah, my original Xbox has a Philips V2 drive (V1 are a POS) and it reads all kinds of media i.e CD-R, CD-RW, DVD +/- R/W.

I'm glad M$ are putting these BenQ's into the 360.

Please keep posts relevant, and stop repeating answered questions. I removed almost 2/3rd's of the post in this thread in a attempt to keep it more on topic, based on facts and actual important information.

I only purchased my 360 within the last 2 weeks, so I was able to return it and get a new BenQ drive 360.  While I do notice that it is quieter, it's not whisper quiet like I'm hearing others claim it to be.  It's quiet in relation to the other 360 drives, for sure.  I can almost ignore the hum rather than want to shove the two nearest semi-blunt object into my ears.

I'm wondering if it's just me, so I was curious... for those that have owned an older 360 and now own a BenQ, just HOW much quieter are you seeing this BenQ as?  Also, occasionally I hear a sort of high pitched white, but not so much loud as a just bit distracting.  Any experience on this?  Should I give this one a return and try another 360 with a BenQ?

P.S my hearing is really good and i think both drives are just as noisy. I feel I also had a pretty quiet hitaci. I have never heard a drive at release but people who claim that this drive is "super" quiet and only makes a "whisper" what the hell are u smoking? It might be a little bit quiter but nothnig thatsa  huge improement that should be go buy a new one lol

I did notice for some odd reason, my games eem to be more detailed and more vibrant on the benq drive. just strange.

I have as well just purchased a new Xbox 360 with the BenQ drive. If there is anything I can do to help let me know, I took it all the way apart already and then quickly learned that there wasn't a firmware hack for it yet. I am not a hacker, or programmer, but I have general computer knowledge so if there is anything I can do, let me know, I'd like to aid the development of this as much as I can.

Thanks,
Derek

It's pretty quiet in general, I can barely tell sometimes when a disc is active.. I have heard that whining sound you are referring to one time, but only one time. It was kind of high pitched for a moment, It was my imagination of what those dog collars do to dogs when we can't hear it. Lol.

so you don't hear your drive? like when you put a 360 game cd in, your drive does not spin up at all? Like is your drive completely silent?

Well, I can hear it of course, but it is much comparably quieter than my uncle's 360 which was one of the first pre-orders

damn hehe, I'd hate to hear what the originals sounded like then lol. This system with the ben Q drive runs a lot cooler too, less heat when i put ym hand in the back after an hour of gameplay etc
