We Can Flash 78fk's With The X360usb!
« on: January 12, 2007, 08:35:00 AM »

Before you wet your pants this thread doesn't offer a solution the problem - but simply outlines how it is possible to be fixed by someone with the know-how. And with software, not hardware.

So what is the problem? Xecuters X360USB kit does not work with the current rom version 78FK hitachi flash solution using the toolbox. Dumping the firmware or writing to it results in a crash 100% of the time. This also applies to any SATA --> USB adapter. A more technical outlook was given by carranzafp with this statement (for those who know what all this means):

Just some clarifications

I never stated works with X360 USB adapter. All my tests were done on native sata. I just got a X360 USB adapter right now, and this is what I found:

Classic memdump works fine, also start and stop the spin, the only problem is with RAW memdump because maybe (AND A BIG MAYBE) the X360 USB does not support all subsets of commands, maybe they only implement on the product the commands that seventhson program used.

Maybe X-STAFF could confirm if their product supports E7 subcommand 6 and subcommand 7. Note that I am not saying it does not support them it is just that the program hangs when try to issue that commands...

This is not an application issue, the application relies on MMC commands, if the windows/adapter/chipset etc does not support them then that is the problem.

So. We now know the problem. But how do I know it is possible to fix? The following explains how I know this and also explains why Team Xecuter said they flashed fine with the X360USB. This is taken from this post on the xecuter forums:

http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44529

Here is what Xecuter said:

360usb isnt designed as is to flash the 78

there is a small patch that can be made to the fw to enable it to dump and write - thats what we did in testing the toolbox when beta testing

right now id recommend using a sata card

So there is a possible patch! So why haven't they released it? I do suspect it is because of the new X78 product which is a soldered PCB that goes directly on the controller board that puts the 78FK in modeb without need of slax. Maybe it could damage sales? I don't know - im not a professional on that.

But I think it is important for this patch to be released or the firmware gods to look into this to see if they can replicate it. This would allow not only the X360USB, but probably all SATA --> USB adapters too.

Any input?

Hmm....

Very Funny....

Yep, you could patch the v78 firmware to be able to use Classic Memdump and old Flashing....

But.... How would get the patch into the v78 firmware, you would need to use a SATA chipset
or card to flash the patch into the drive....

Pointless.....

This is not the right direction to FIX the USB to SATA problem.

Oh god damn. I create a topic and you blow it out of the water ph34r.gif . I should of known not to ask for it from the gods  wink.gif

Thanks for clarifying it though - I guess now we can look at other solutions. Although, im beginning to doubt there is one.
