QUOTE(KarlosB @ Jan 13 2007, 07:00 PM) *

method for fixing bad flash ms28 (no working eject or read or write) ..

i did this (thanks to blizzil on #fw)

thankfully the guy who brought his xbox, did get a working orig.bin which i modified (xtreme 5.2) and put put in the main directory of my usb drive.

opened my pc, got 2 xboxs with power supplys, and grounded them to my pc case, one had none working ms28, one had perfect ms28 flashed with 5.2C.

turned on his xbox

wired mine up to sata (working one), then i went to my usb boot disk turned on my xbox (allready made for bad flash method)

type mtkflash w /sata hacked.bin (his binary file) ...ok menu pops up 1 2 or 3 (3 is my vt8237)

when this menu popped up, i switched the sata cable into his xbox (broken one) (which was allready powered on)

pressed 3, counted 10 seconds, and what do you know, it flashed perfectly, i then tested it, it ejected first time, put a backup in it, instant boot! and the job was done ohmy.gif...

BTW i tried the 10 second without hotswapping it, nothing...wouldnt read or write to the drive, just port errors.

hope this helps.

Thanks for this "tutorial"! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)
But do you think this might work with an ms25 and an ms28 as well?

there is no harm in trying smile.gif, im not sure if they both flash the exact same way, but i assume so, as you can simply put a ms28 FW on a ms25 and its ok.

What we almost need then is a re-engineered version of mtkflash which simply skips the port checks.  Now, one would need to be careful with this because in theory you could just do really f'd up things if you had the wrong devices hooked up.

Essentially all your doing is tricking mtkflash into thinking the drive is responding on all the ports.

Great work!

this is a good idea, in theory it would be perfect for these problems!, however as i said, what i posted was simply an assumption of what i "think" mtkflash does, i am no good with code or anything, more better with hardware and testing things..

if this could be created, im sure it would be a very welcomed, and very popular too, because if you cant get another samsung drive to hotswap, you are pretty much screwed. but yes, people would have to be very, very carefull of doing this, as if it has no check beforehand, you could flash the wrong drive very easily i presume, but we could tell them to unplug everything else!.

please excuse my ignorance but what is hotswapping actually achieving?

can anyone explain how that would let you flash a possibly bricked drive?

My drive won't eject, but it seems mktflash does see it because when I run the command it appears as Xtreme Primary Master as a selectable drive? Does that tell you guys anything?

I need to have another try as when I tried writing yesterday it gave up half way and I just assumed Id bricked the drive.

many thanks, a confused and tired Simon :]

who knows, maybe someone who knows more about mtkflash can enlighten us?...

another theory would be something like

mtkflash on a good drive, the possibly returns a code number (like for example when you flash it and hit escape, it says error 80 should be 70, or 51 should be 70, ive heard samsung needs 70 to flash, but maybe the bad drive simply doesnt give mtkflash an acceptable reply.

btw, i was very surprised it actually worked too, but it did, and it worked first time.

I have tried this many time,,

The 10 sec works when read but not when write...

Here is what works every time for me when i have the orig.bin..

1. i power up pc with the ms28 connected
2. i type mtkflash /m /sata hacked.bin (still with ms28 connected)
3. at the selection screen i select my ms28 drive (still with ms28 connected)
4. Bada Bing no 10 sec. waiting,,, updates like ms25,,, it works every time !!!! tongue.gif

P.S. I use viasata..

Hope this helps..

I just did this today, the one that KarlosB posted. I have a VT8237R onboard chipset.
Worked like a charm.

Been having problems lately when i flash samsung drives, the flashing freezes for a few seconds, and then continues (thank god), and well, 2 days ago it got stuck forever, and bricked a MS28, but thanks to the swaptrick it was revived.

I just ordered a new vt6421A pci card, see if that fixes it, i flash from a USB stick, always, (sammy & benQ), might be a bad usb stick?

Anyways, thanks for this awsome trick.
