been using an NEC 3500AG for every burn and not a single coaster and even using memorex DL media and everything works with no problems, so NEC is not a shitty burner, it depends on what media and speed you burn at.

never had an open tray or dde error with anything.

No, i would definitly like to re-adress this.

Yes, NEC's ARE infact shitty burners, confirmed by *hundreds* of users on this forum and others. Im not kidding....hundreds. And seeing that im one of them, who saw *exactly* the difference between a NEC, which constantly burned coasters, and open tray's (yes, on verbatim), and my pioneer 111D which hasnt burned a single coaster yet, i think that this issue is settled.

NEC blows.

1: Media brand used - Ritek 'Tuffdisc' DVD+R/DL (Works perfectly 100%) & Ricoh DVD-+R/DL(Worked 100% until I upgraded from 4.2a to 5.1c. Now all I get are Open Trays)
2: Burner used - Pioneer 111D crossflashed to 111L 82.9INT
3: Drive - ms25, Console region - PAL Manufacter date please - Errr...I know the TS-H493's March 2006  rolleyes.gif
4: Which firmware you tested with - 5.1c
5: Backup game title plus region - Various, but a rough concensus is like this: Gears of War PAL (Ritek) - Worked 100% on 4.2a and 5.1c. Rainbow Six Vegas PAL (Ricoh) - Worked 100% on 4.2a. Refused to do anything on 5.1c. Guarenteed Open Tray on there, even from cold, where there wasn't before.

It's either back to 4.2a for me, or I take the plunge and chance the ruberband mod, and that for some reason the new firmware's just playing funny buggers with the PFI & SS reading, and hasn't stopped reading the Ricoh's entirely.

Here's to not breaking the DVD-ROM....

You just have a really shitty burner (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) NEC is probably the worst burner you can have for 360. Get a 111D and fix your problems

Okay. Hmmm... can't I change mediabrand? Maybe NECs don't like Verbatims?

I guess I have to invest in a new burner. Pioneer DVR 111D you say?

But I have a question, why does it read when the xbox is cold?

A Pioneer 111D can be bought for about £20 OEM. For ease of making backups, and the savings made from not burning coasters, it's money well spent I'd say. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

As for reading when the console's booted from cold, I'd hazard a guess that since the electronics, and specifically, the laser unit, are cold, they're working exactly to spec, whereas after warming up, they're performing on a slightly wider margin (Whether it's to do with power fluctuations, laser strength, or something similar, I couldn't even begin to say. I'm no electronics engineer). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Not enough to throw a wobbly at a manufactured disc, but enough to mis-read a backup DVD+R/DL. Just a guess as I said. I'll probably get shot down for that soon enough. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Maybe your right and he's been lucky with his NEC.
I'd just like to say I've had my NEC3500AG for over 2½ years and Its burned 1 coaster in all that time and that was beacause of me testing something for the PS2 that didn't work.
I've had no coaster , DDE or open disc error on my 360 at all, so maybe I've been lucky too.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'd suggest using 5.1c. It gives you the fast read speed first, then, if you can't read a backup, putting in an original will then load all subsiquent backups at a much slower speed to ensure a more reliable boot.

From the 5.1 readme:

For Xtreme 5.1A backup Read Speed is always same as original game disks 12x. Original discs unaffected

For Xtreme 5.1B backup Read Speed is always quiet/slow. Original discs unaffected.

For Xtreme 5.1C default backup Read Speed is same as original game disks 12x. When Original Game disk is booted, all subsequent backup loading will be at Quiet/Slow Read mode, Original Game disks are unaffected. Turn console off/on to reset back to Default backup read speed (12x). Quiet/Slow Read Speed is for quiet operation and/or cheap DVD+R DL media.

For Xtreme 5.1D default backup Read Speed is Quiet/Slow 2-4x. When Original Game disk is booted, all subsequent backup loading will be at Fast Read mode 12x, Original Game disks are unaffected. Turn console off/on to reset back to Default backup read speed for backups (2-4x).

If you see a lot of read errors at the normal (fast) speed, then I'd suggest that you switch to 5.1B which will then read all backups at the slower speeds.

On an update to my previous post, regarding the problems I was having with the new 5.1 firmware, and the reading of Ricoh DVD+R/DL discs that worked perfectly under 4.2a, I did the rubberband mod today, and everything's running 100%. I even tested two discs, after playing the first game for a good ten minutes, which prior to the rubberband mod, would require me to power down the console for an hour or so to make sure it read the disc, and it worked perfectly. No more Open Tray errors (He prays)! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

there is no best one, they offer different read speeds.  always fast, always slow, default fast/change to slow, or default slow/change to fast.
the slower speed is for cheaper media to read better and also keeps the drive quiet, some are bothered that the drive is loud.

I can now confirm a working backup of my Halo that I have wasted numerous coasters and re-writes (and posts) since v5.

I T  W A S  T H E  M E D I A

First try, same .ISO that had been failing on other media, works perfectly well on Taiyo Yuden -R 16x.  Burn tested at 8x.

Thanks all. Cheers.
memturbo -> try some different media!

You don't need to reflash the original firmware, but you do need to use the Enable0800 disc (it was included in the xtreme 4.2 release.)
