I Know How To Flash Drives, Just Now How To Update Them
« on: December 23, 2006, 07:51:00 AM »

Hey guys, this probably is a somewhat newbieish question, however no need to fret as I already flashed my Hitachi 57 drive with no problems.

I followed HitachiSamsungTutorial found here to flash my drive, but it doesn't explain how to *upgrade* my drive. I figured it would have to be a somewhat different method than burning a fresh out of the box drive.

I want to upgrade to the newest recommended firmware, Maximus-Garyopa Hitachi-LG Xtreme v2.3 Stealth 8in1 Revision2, and I only have XTREME-HITACHI-7IN1-V2_1 currently on mine. Is there a better tutorial out there than the one I've been using, or can someone give me a decent explination how to upgrade? I don't want to brick my drive. Thanks guys!!

Flash it with was.bat then flash again with the updated version of the hacked firmware.

I don't have a was.bat, I have a was.bin, and it's in a X21-1571.OPA folder on my PC. Is that what you meant?

The best way to upgrade is to simple restore the firmware back to normal (read the readme, restore.bat). Once restored, you just have to reflash with the newer xtreme firmware (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I just recently did the same upgrade.  All I did was put the drive in modeb by turning it on with the tray out, run restore.bat, then run flash23s.bat right after restoring.

Wow so basically all that it takes to flash these drives with these new firmwares is running a bat? I remember having to do some crazy stuff like making up a 4 digit code and entering a bunch of numbers and commands and stuff.

Holy hell, what happened to the days of manually inputting my serial number and running 5 different programs before flashing a drive?

I don't plan on backing up games with my Hitachi 57, should I use FLASH16S.BAT? Is there really any benefit to using that if I'm not going to copy games with it?

Also, how the heck does this firmware package restore my old firmware? I find that amazing. I figured it would need all my old files and stuff from when I first flashed this drive.

That's because the firmware flashes on the hitachi drive don't completely erase the firmware and re-write it like the samsung does. It just patched the firmware around the key. Therefore, you don't need your original firmware to restore. Just run restore.bat and then flash23s.bat to flash your drive. And I see no benefit from using flash16 over flash23. You still can't do proper backups with the hitachi drive anyway.

Thanks so much man. I promise I only have one more question, the whole reason I updated my firmware is to be able to play single layer DVD R's on my XBox. I have a few games that will fit on a single layer DVD and I can't get them to play. Any ideas if this firmware worked or not?
