You have to follow these instructions exactly, timing is important. I think any VT6421A will work (I have the raid version)

Turn off the Xbox 360 and PC.
Connect the SATA cable from the MS28 drive to the PC.
Leave a PC CD or DVD drive on one of the IDE channels
Turn on the PC and boot from floppy , but leave the 360 off.
When you get to command prompt, turn 360 on.
Type this command: mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin and hit enter
It should display your ports. Do NOT select anything, just leave it at the "menu"
Turn off your 360.
Now, select the port the 360 was connected to, even though the 360 is now off.
It will "pause" when you select that port
I counted to ten, then turned on the 360
It started reading automatically

this is the method I used with MS28

1. prepare flash pen drive with xtreme bootmaker with both ms28 options checked.
2. connect 360 drive to sata port on inside of pc case not the external one
3. used connectivity kit with both eject and mode buttons up, applied power with external transformer
4. started pc and waited for it to boot.
5. typed samread command
6. when option screen for flash came up I pulled power to transformer on connectivity kit.
7. selected device to be  flashed and pressed key on pc (was option 2 on mine)
8. counted to 10 then powered transformer again.
9. it read firmware great, but I pulled pen drive plugged into another pc in windows to check firmware in firmware toolbox
10. repeated steps 4 to 8 but using samhack command

this worked fine and I had no other mktflash compatible drive in my pc I only had my hdd on primary master and pioneer 111D on secondary master, I presume without a transformer you could do same with molex connector extended out of pc case, but I had the transformer with my sata usb adapter that I have used for hitachi drives, so just used it to save opening my pc, as I have left the sata cable hanging out the back. I had no problems with pc booting with samsung connected and powered up.

Yes YOU HAVE to have a via chipset and yes via 6421A or L will work.   With this card or chipset you have to perform the 10 second method OR the bad flash recovery method.

IF you want to flash it with a different chipset YOU MUST perform the VCC method which require removing a resistor from the dvd drive board and installing a small switch then once flashed you can remove the switch and replace resistor OR just connect the pads the resistor was on.  closing the circuit .
