Toshi Or Sammy?
« on: December 03, 2006, 07:49:00 PM »

Hello
I am new here so be easy on me.
1st,  Between the 2 drives available.  The Sammy and the Toshi.  I have read that the Toshi is easier to work with except when talking about the 0078fk.  If I plan on doing some sort of firmware mod then I probably want to buy a Sammy just to avoid the possibility of getting a 78fk.  And considering that there is no way of knowing if the Toshi drive is a 78 unless I open up the box, then I cant return it to the store cause its been opened.  Right?  So go for a Sammy...

first of all..   it is HITACHI and samsung/toshiba   (samsung & toshiba are together same drive)

Samsung/toshiba are basically referred to as samsung

hitachi drives are what you i believe are referring to as toshi drives.

Hitachi does have the dreaded 0078 drive which if you find a xbox made before august you will be alright for not getting this drive.

and yeah I would try in MY OPINION to get a samsung.. easier to recover from incase of bad flashing.   Hitachi drives are not able to be recovered if the flashing fails for whatever reason

Im sorry about messing up the names.  I didnt realize that.  Yeah, I was thinking about aiming for the Sammy/Toshiba and not the Hitachi which could have the 78.
But maybe this is in the wrong forum but, Isn't the Samsung the drive that you actually have to get the epoxy off the chip to do a Modchip install and with the Toshiba you dont have to ?

Well,
Here's what I got.  Premium system
                            Mfg date:  2006-04-16
                            Serial 100763461608
Im pretty sure its a Hitachi-LG cause its got the little holes in the plastic in the drive.
But based on the Mfg date it is probably not the dreaded 0078fk?  Right?
So should I keep it?  I plan on doing a firmware flash/hack.

What is the 79 drive?  Do you mean the 000078fk?  So in other words I am safe to open it up and find out exactly which Hitachi drive it is?  I'm dying to know.

Well I looked at that tutorial to find out what drive (if you can call it one) on the tutorials pages.  The one where it shows 3 different drives With the phillips on the left, and the other 2 well I cant read what it says on the stickers in the pic.  And whoever put up the pic didnt bother to label them.  But I have the one in the middle. The one with 2 tiny little holes in the plastic part of the drive where you put the dvd/games in.  I am assuming its the Hitachi-LG...
I might take it back and try for a Sammy cause I dont want to have to mess with the rubberband trick if my backups wont read after awhile...Is that right?  Im suprised I got one from April.  The dude at walmart said that they were all from a new shipment....

I just got a "new" console on sat night from gamestop and it is a sammy manufactured in may 06.  you probably have the hitachi if it has the two rectangular holes near the front of the tray.  hitachi seems to be a little easier to flash IMO. so I wouldnt worry about trying to get a samsung.

i have got both hitachi and t/s in my opinion try and get the hitachi it took me about an hour to figure out how to flash it with the t/s im still trying 4 days later!!

dont worry if you brick the drive i just have on the t/s and i took it back to the shop and told them it was faulty they replaced it straight away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) , dont forget their just shop staff and the only way to tell if the warrenty void is by taking the outer case of.

KEEP THE RECIEPT!!!!!
