You need to use one of the modified bitsetting firmwares.
Can't advise you on which one but I would go for the latest, click on "Click here for a detailled overview on the used strategies in each firmware" at the bottom of the page it will tell you the date of release.

I also thought the latest firmwares for the 360 didn't need bitsetting to dvd-rom,  I can't be sure of that fact though.

edit/ just had a look st the 1.04 NEC firmware its supposed to have bittseting for DVD+R DL, I'd go to cd freaks forum and ask there about the firmware.

I have the NEC 3550a (not the same as your, hope it work the same way) I use the Mad Dog 1f2 firmware from the site you listed above with Verbatim @ 2.4x, works like a charm.

If you use the Mad Dog firmware, it default booktype for +r dl to DVD-ROM already  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

What media isn't it recognising, have you tried different disc ?

Didn't you get any help about this at cdfreaks ?

Have you tried different media ?

If the drive new, I'd take it back as faulty.
