The firmware mod is of cause only free if you do it yourself. I have the impression that 90% or so, who have their xbox 360 firmware patched, actually payed some one else to do it for them.

Of cause if you put up a poll on this site, the result would properly, show that people do it them selves - but most people who payed to have it firmware modded properly don't even visit here.

The point is: most people pay to have their box modded, and the price difference for a chip mod and a firmware mod is next to nothing. So even though people may argue that the firmware is free and the author of the firmware are not making money off this - other people are. And therefore it is not a valid argument to firmware flash over chipping, only because it is free.

There may however in the future be other arguments, that firmware flashing is a better solution than chipping, but the reason is not that it is free, unless you can do it yourself (which most people can't or are willing to).

"And now everybody hold your breath, take a few seconds of silence and bow down because we will show you the first picture of our NME v1.2 Modchip:"................

Are they serious..... I have personal experience with this organization. I've been holding my breath for about 4   months now, for a response to 3 emails........ Personal feelings aside..... this chip is just like the last. It is not upgradeable, just like there two other products....So if for some reason your 360 or your drive becomes unusable and your new drive is one that is yet to come out ....exactly you need a new chip or your back to november 2005 ...

When I become silent for a few seconds and then bow down it's usually right before I vomit..... Firmware is the way to go.. I learned the hard way thanks to NME... But if you have to buy one of these products try the globe 360...Eeprom is supposedly upgradeable

Erm, I'm not bowing down to any people who create a flashable chip for a DVD-ROM drive. It's just plain stupid and dumb. This product is REALLY only interesting for pirates, since people can also make backups using the old fashioned (and free) way. Although I even doubt that they will want it.

As long as it doesn't make the Xbox 360 run homebrew applications, it's not worth buying.

Are you sure about that? What if the person lacks the skills\equpiment to solder and hires someone else to do it? Its more money...If people are hesitant at making software changes what will make them confident about making hardware changes?

I was under the impression that these chips write data to your drives firmware every time it goes into a modded state.

And the nand memory on the drives have a limited lifespan.

So as it stands getting a chip is not a feature enhancement it is just dooming your drive.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Excuse my ignorance... but aren't the firmware flashes being banned on Live now (or some of them anyway)? I would think a chip would be the way to go (with it's 'stealth' ability) - although these chips should be flashable so that they can be upgraded.

Evidence? Of banning? That's why I said 'excuse my ignorance'... as I've just read this 'in passing' and assumed that people were having issues being banned from Live with firmware-flashed dvdrom drives. I don't know for sure...

I've been thinking of trying out a NME chip for awhile (I haven't even messed with the firmware flashes yet), and thought that it looks like a pretty good solution. Just wondering if someone could post a few pros & cons of going with one of these chips compared to flashing the firmware on the dvdrom drive.

pros:
the chip is only active when a backup is inserted. (The safe feeling people get from this is rather false imo. The ways to detect this are just like other firmware flashes if checks are implemented in the kernel (and there can be like proven in the last dashboard/kernel update.)

cons:
not updatable
lacks features such as media stealth and the soon ariving single layer support
games from xtrme firmware are not directly playable but need extra patching

Thanks for the reply krayzie. So it sounds like everyone pretty much agrees that a chip like this is pointless then (when a person could just flash their dvdrom drive)?

My other concern is having to flash a bunch of drives. Always having to take my PC and open it everytime I wanted to flash a drive isn't really a good option for me - as my PC is buried in a desk. I know that fellas from  Xecutor have the USB adapter, but unfortunately I don't think it works with all dvdrom drives at the moment. If it did, then that would be perfect for me. Anyone have any suggestions as to what would be the easiest way to flash multiple drives then?

Wow so many negatives on here. When i read this I only thought of positive things.

I though wow a solution for those 0079 drives that does not require tsop removal.
I though how much simpler it would be to solder 4-5 wires and be done. No messing around with trying to detect your drive with sata. MS28 drives are such a pain for some people.

I did think about upgrades and with it not being easy to upgrade (or impossible) that would be the largest drawback to me.

So if i had a 0079 i would be willing to spend the cash on this chip.
