Tried Flashing Xbox 360 Dvd Firmware
« on: November 16, 2006, 02:26:00 PM »

has anyones power supply in their pc blown and smoked when trying to flash 360 dvd drive?
why would this be?  I hooked up the 360 dvd Sata to my pc and the power hooked up to the 360 with the 360 plugged in.  My pc smoked real bad as soon as I powered it on.  What did i do wrong?

no i have no kit.  I read if you hook the xbox 360 dvd drive to the motherboard of your computer via Sata cord and then also have the xbox dvd drive power cord hooked up to the xbox that would be fine?  Someone please correct me if i am wrong

I have been following this guide.  Should the xbox 360 be powered on when doing this or should the dvd drive be completely unatatched to the 360 when hooked up to the pc?

also just to mention, I was using the sata cord that came with the 360 to hook up to pc's motherboard

when connecting the 360 to the pc in any way you should connect a wire from the earth on the 360 and the earth on the pc.  I take it you done this?

First off... you did everything fine.

1. Sata cord from pc to xbox dvd drive...
2.  power cord from xbox console to dvd drive.

That is fine..  now how did your psu blow up???

Lets see.. the only way this can possibly happen is

1.  Just plain coincidence.. bad luck. (probably not this option but who knows)
2.  You shorted something somewhere,  now where I have no clue...BUT..

Did you say you used the sata cord that the 360 uses to connect to console??   you used this small ass sata cord to connect the drive to the pc port???   How the hell did you do this?  if you did do this.. how did  you get the power from xbox to dvd drive .

Obviously the sata cable from the 360 is very small.. so the dvd drive would HAVE to be VERY close to your motherboard... on top of that.. how the hell did you stretch the power cord from the console into the pc to the dvd drive??   this as far as I can see.. can not stretch that far..

IF you did do this.. I am sure you must have shorted something somewhere when trying to make all this happen.

You really should use a normal sata cable.

Isnt the 360 SATA cable about 4 inches long? Man you gotta be a little more patient and make sure you have evrything you need before attempting something like this. SATA cables are cheap. I wish you jad a picture of what it looked like. I feel for you though if you did any major damage but still wish you had a pic! I can just see youre 360 halfway inside youre PC, yikes!

haha ya guys it was a pretty dumb move.  I guess i was just too excited haha.  I hope the drive is alright.  I guess i will find out soon enough.  so getting a longer sata cord and using the power one that comes with the xbox 360 will be fine?  and is the birdy flasher any good...it seems pretty simple and I like simple so i'd prefer using it as long as it is good?   any ideas guys and thanks for being helpful

Right when I read you used the 360's SATA cable, I knew right then that was your problem haha. I can just picture it in my head.

Yes, longer SATA cable. Let the 360 power on the DVD drive. Ground the chassis of the 360 - PC.

Now the question is, what DVD drive do you have and what revision is it?

Once you figure out what drive it is, I highly recommend you read the tutorials step by step. I'm seeing too many noobs lately that go and rush to things.

Thats what i thought....

I too would like to have seen how the hell you pulled that off.. (guess you really didn't)

On a side note.. I still wonder how  your psu fried???   this for some reason I doubt.. of course I guess it could happen but what would fry the psu???   more likely whatever you shorted I would think would fry your motherboard not the psu.

How may I ask were you going to get it into mode b??   were you going to use the 2 wire trick on top of it??   is that what you shorted?

are you SURE it was your power supply?   you know SOME or maybe even all DELL power supplies I know for one has a reset feature.. something like unplugging it from main board... turning on pc (even though nothing happens) then plug psu back to board.. or something like that.  I have seen this happen.

Let us know what drive you have.. and your success..

i have the hitachi 47d model....and by ground you mean?  well i kinda know what you mean but how do i do this? and what is wrong with birdy's flash program that does it all for you? Also i know it was the PSU because i bought a new one and I am using the same computer as we speak.  I just hope i am doing everything right and this doesn't happen again.  Does the 360 need to be powered on for this to work correctly? To get it to mode B i was going to use the boot cd, which i was doing when this happened
