The 100% Correct Way To Flash A Ms28
« Reply #90 on: December 08, 2006, 08:20:00 PM »

ahh yes dell's usually have issues with internal additions such as pci cards.  first go to your device manager and expand scsi/raid controllers and make sure you see the VIA there.  if not, then the drivers are not installed correctly.  I'm not too familiar with the dell bios anymore but try exploring for a setting with pci enable on bootup or something of the sort.

also you can go to viaarena.com and get the new 5.30c drivers for the card.  also try to see a list of your devices when your pc is booting up, you will have to turn off the dell logo which is in the bios might be titled "banner"

It is listed in the device manager, and when I turn off the 360 it says drive not found, and when I turn it on, its an a0 which means the VIA card must be active, and how do I hex edit the normal mtkflash so it can find the H943A drive if thats possible

Name   VIA VT6421 RAID Controller

get the newest version of extreme book maker and follow textbooks tutorial here to set up the boot disc and try the mod that way.  if you still get the error, you can try taking the automatically hex edited mtkflash .typ and .exe and copy those to a ms-dos bootbale disc as you made before just with windows formatting.  alternatively, when you click the detect id i/o button on xtreme boot maker, thats your values for the ID and i/o in the mtkflash editing tutorial.  other than that i'm out of ideas sorry bro.

You have anyone else's computer you could try it on?

The 100% Correct Way To Flash A Ms28
« Reply #96 on: December 09, 2006, 08:46:00 PM »

Hi,
Please Excuse my Noobness.
I am trying to flash my ms28. Without add on sata card, I am using on board sata.
I am using extreme bootmaker .0.3.6 with all check marks etc.
I boot off of USB and type mtk flashr/morig.bin or mtkflashr/m/sataorig.bin, both seem to work. My xbox 360 is on and hooked up.
I get menu with three choices,
1 IDE Pri   (I have to leave one cd drive in or PC wont boot)
2 xtreme pri   (which is my usb I am booting from)
3 VIA 8237 pri master
I turn off my xbox 360 and then I choose 3, I then see on my screen.......
Port b400,master slave :aO
I wait ten seconds and turn xbox back on and my screen reads
get flash type : SST(SST39SF020)
Under that it says
ERR:fail to open input file
at this point I can no longer type anything.
Can anyone help?

PS Thanks for all your time and efforts with these tutorials and sharing all this info.

Ok, I tried it again this is what worked for me.
still using jump drive I made with xtreme bootmaker which allows you to use PC with on board sata. This jump drive has to made on the computer that you are using to work on your xbox with prior to taking apart PC to hook up xbox 360.
Hard drives disconnected, but one cd/dvd drive installed because my computer wont boot at all with out one.
xbox off, turn PC on, it boots from usb to c prompt.
turn on xbox 360 that is hooked up to sata on pc
typed samread 123456 12345 (that open up mtkflashr)
thats when the choices come up for drives
1. is for the jump drive it is named extreme pri master
2 was for my cd/dvd drive named IDE pri master
3 was the xbox 360 sammy drive named via 8237 pri master
I then turned off my xbox 360 and typed 3
my screen had.....
port b400,master slave:a0
I counted to about six seconds and turned xbox 360 on
my screen then had.....
get flash type : SST(SST39SF020)
and almost imediately it started with a counter that was showing my sammy drive being read
when that was done the screen told me to turn off xbox and pc before running samhack.
I turned them both off and then booted the PC with the jump drive again.
after booting up I then turned on xbox, typed samhack 123456 12345 and hit enter
turned off xbox and chose 3 on my screen again and waited 6 seconds and turned xbox back on.
it installed the hack to my dvd drive and left me with instructions that it was done and turn stuff off.
I will test this out ASAP and let you all know if it worked.
Happy modding.

question...can anyone explain how this works if you are reflashing a drive that already has xtreme firmware on it?  How do the steps change if you have to use the enable 0800 dvd first?  Do you just need to put in the dvd in the very beginning before you start the flash?  Or do you need to have the dvd in each time for 10 seconds everytime you turn the 360 back on?

I have ich5 chipset. So, do I need the modified mtkflash of startpost or is it modified for the pci card of the startpost?

Thanks for the hint 'addicted2modding.' Been trying to use xboxeperts method and kept getting a status 51 should be 70 error. Switched of XB and started it and got a 'error failed to open input file' message.
Was almost giving up hope, then read ur post and tried xtrememaker and samread stuff. Worked perfectly, have a 4.2b flashed drive now, thanks very much.
Can someone confirm for me, the difference of 4.2a and 4.2b is only the read speed of the dvd drive right?
Thanks

This is the original bad flash method.  The method in this thread is not the bad flash method and is more complicated.

You don't need to use this method or the bad flash method if you already have the xtreme firmware on it.  If you have a version 3.3 and below - you should treat it as a ms25.  If it is 4 and higher - what you have to do is:

1. connect the pc to 360 drive
2. turn on 360 first
3. insert 0800 dvd+r dl disk in and wait for the drive to read it (the disk read sound will be very brief or you can just wait 10 seconds)
4. take the 0800 disk out and close 360 tray - leave the 360 on
5. Boot pc to dos prompt
6. flash as if you have a ms25

Do you have an ms25 or ms28 drive?  If you have a ms28 drive you cannot use the ich5 chipset to flash it - you must have a via either 6421 or 8237.

I have a ms28 drive, I haven't yet flashed anything but I want to update to the fall update for the 1080 display of my xbox.  Should I update it before I flash it, update it after a flash, or not update it at all, is this safe to do.  I've looked around haven't seen anything really on this kind of topic so I figure I'll put it in with a ms28 topic about flashing thanks. If there is a topic about this yell at me all you want I understand biggrin.gif

@daveguywhy

Just unhook the drive before doing the update.
You should be fine.

Ok Now My question..
Do I have the wrong version of mtkflash?
I keep getting 51 should be 70 when I go to read the drive.

I have tryed every possible Second to turn the 360 on and off but still I can't get the 70 code.
I had the 0800 already burned for the other drives, and tryed that but it did not work.

Any ideas one what might work for me
Working with a K8S MV Board. It has worked on all the other drives I have done: 25/15 and 47D
