The 100% Correct Way To Flash A Ms28
« Reply #120 on: December 18, 2006, 08:42:00 PM »

I'd like to thank the OP, but anyone who's having problems, here is what I had to do to get mine working with the VT6421A card and an MS28 drive:

1) Disable all your drives in BIOS
2) Power off PC and 360.
3) Hook up 360 drive to SATA card.
4) Turn on 360.
5) Turn on PC.
6) Run mtkflash ( pass whatever parameters you are using to backup your firmware or write your new one here )
7) MTKFlash should detect the drive in the list of drives.  DO NOT PICK IT (yet)
8) Turn off the 360 and then pick the drive.
9) It will hang trying to read/write.  Turn your 360 back on.  (Don't bother counting or anything)
10) It should immediately kick off the read or write process.

You're done.

It took me a few different tries by trying different combos of what the OP posted, but the end result for me were the above steps.  No counting or anything was necessary, and it's pretty straightforward.

The 100% Correct Way To Flash A Ms28
« Reply #121 on: December 20, 2006, 11:45:00 PM »

Hi there guys.

I tried the tutorial at the top of this page to assist me in flashing my ms-28 using the 6421L SATA card.  Just when I think I am making process, I fail. (insert laugh, along with frustrated emotion here)

I installed the latest version of xtremebootmaker.0.3.6.  My drivers are the latest for my SATA card, and I have downloaded the latest version of Xtreme50.

I have disabled my SATA hard drive in the BIOS, along with my DVD burner.  I changed my primary boot device to be my USB key, which has been made into a boot disk using xtremebootmaker.

The tutorial says I should get 'Status 51 should be 80'.  However my screen displays, 'Status=51, Should be 70'.
I read elsewhere, or perhaps in this thread that when it says the above, the drive is locked.  What exactly that means I don't know.

So I don't know where I am going wrong as I follow the tutorial here.  I printed out the tutorial and have used it as a reference, yet it's not working.

Any suggestions, as I am running out of ideas.
Thanks in advance and happy holidays.

I can't find the thread right now, but I read about someone who successfully flashed an ms28 without a VIA SATA card, but instead used a USB to SATA converter. I've now come across my first ms28 and I have one of these on its way:

http://usb.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=00002

Am I correct in assuming I can use this to get an ms28 drive detected? I'm just wondering if I should go ahead and order a VIA card or not.

Ahhh... you're all too slow! wink.gif I went ahead and ordered this:

I read somewhere that the USB to SATA adaptor doesn't work with Samsung drives.

hi everyone.

so here is the big problem:

i have abit ag8... my big bro has msi neo2-p and my lil bro has a newer asus..

i have UHCI 5 sata.. or something.. but my lil bro has UHCI 7

i downloaded the xtreme bootmaker 3.6

started the program.. check the custom mktflash box then set to serial ata driver and hit the detect i/o ( only detected my lil bros sata i/o, so finally we used that pc)

ok.. some number came up.. goood!
oh btw.. i have samsung 28....

so.. check the format and bootable box and hit prepare drive.

my pendrive is ready...good

so i go to the bios...
first boot device .... usb (goood)

disconnect ide cables, cd, sata hardrive.. then f10..y...

xbox unconnected power off..
pc power on...
type mktflash r /m orig.bin

connect box and then power on and hit enter then:
xtreme sata master
xtreme sata slave

hit numero 1 and
something like this came up:

port: f0... or something.. if i hit esc.. it says: 51 should be 70

with samread method its says: port 400.............. a0? sometimes b0 at the end of the line....

i tried with floppy... i tried with my computer, big bro's pc..... tried with xtrerme 5a.... 42a...42b................... nothing.

now i have to sleep some.. "today" i will read the whole topic.. but i hope you guyz can says something smart!!!! goood night

ps: maybe the port f0 problem is come up if i hit number 1 and the port 400 is come up when i hit 2... i cant remember............

Dude;
The MS28 can NOT be flashed by a ICH5 or 7 SATA chipset.
Please go out and buy an Via 6421L SATA PCI card; this is the best card for MS28 drives.
You are out of luck unfortunately....

I NEED HELP

i have a asus p4p 800se ICH5 and a Rosewill RC-212 PCI SATA /IDE Controller Card SATA. I have made a boot floppy with xtreme boot maker and yada yada etc using the 4.2a.

When i boot to dos and type in samread 123456 12345 (or Mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin) i get

"Drive Scaned:
1.IDE Sed Master
2. XTREME Sec Master
Choose one drive: "
I choose #2 then i get
"Port: df80, Master/Slave: a0"
and i get a 2 second pause and regardless of whether the xbox is on or not it says
"FlashType : "SST(SST25VF040)(SERIAL);"
Reading.....00%: "
and it just stays at that screen, i have to restart if i want to exit.

and yes it literaly says SERIAL thats not for any protection purposes lol
What am i doing wrong, or need to do

Thnx ahead for any advice

I had this problem... it was because I had the serial round the wrong way with the SAMREAD command.

entering the last part of the serial number before the first part got it going perfectly.

i.e  12345 1234567  becomes   1234567 12345

If ur using the VIA PCI card you may need to add the option /SATA

mtkflash r /m /sata ORIG.BIN

this works for me..

My MOBO chipset Nforce 570 isn't working with MTKFLASH, is this PCI card going to be ok?
 SYBA SY-VIA-150R PCI SATA /IDE
I guess it will but I wanted to make sure b4 buyng it.
Many thanks.
