Hi folks,

Illl ellaborate a little on the new firmware as i was speaking to maximus himself the other night. He had an issue with a gears or war original game, it would not boot on release 1.5 but does on 1.6 (Even tho a copy booted on bth versions). My MSN was doing wacky things last night so i didnt get the new firmware to try it out yet (update to follow), i wil tell you one thing though, the success rate on the 078 is not great, i have been dumping chips and passing on the firmwares to Gary/Maximus etc for analasys. 078 seems 50/50 atm, a friend had dumped 10 and only got 4 outta the 10 running and i have similar ratio.
However, i can dump they key and put into a replacment hitatchi nol problem at all!!

Ive said it once and im gonna REALLY SAY IT AGAIN, UNLESS YOUR A PRO DO NOT CONSIDER REMOVING THE BLACK EPOXY/COUMPOUND!!   IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED, YOU WILL KILL YOUR DRIVE, ITS NOT JUST OVER IT, ITS ALSO UNDER IT AND HOLDING IT TO THE BOARD!!

i do realise this has been skated around a few times but ive gota ask....   do you have to remove the chip to dump the key?, and if not did you just do it as per normal using memdump?

Just a quick update to correct these many wrong statements.

#1: You can only get the drive into Mode B using any of Slax CD's that work on the other Hitachi drives, you CAN NOT use the external "cross-wire" or "Team-X" or "Xeno" connect kits to get into Debug.

#2: Once in Mode B, currently you can only see the drive in Windows, there is STILL NO DIRECT software which allows you to read or dump or write the firmware via Windows, or Dos, or Linux.

#3: There is Maximus tool called "Firmware Tool Box v2.0" which can handle the new variable KEY placement and encrypt and decrypt the firmware, BUT only after you have removed the chip use an external programmer.

#4: There is also a Xtreme version of "Firmware" for the v78 drive (currently v1.6) but it only works if you first of course again, remove the chip and read it, and find your drive key, and then insert it into the v1.6 firmware and then encrypt it and then program a compatible chip and re-solder that chip back onto your v78 drive.

#5: I personally do have a v78 drive now, thanks to some loyal UK customers that have shipped me one at their cost.

#6: I am working on "software" versions of new tools which will be able to dump and then later write the firmware.

#7: You just need "MORE PATIENCE" then the people staying in line for almost a week for a $600 PS3, with 1 game

I am just a little bit confsued maybe I came in to this conversation to late. Although I was able to get into Mode B using X360 USB Connectivity Kit on my Hitachi drive. So it just depends on which version you have correct?

Nevermind the above post I did not read it was directed to v78. Although Mode B with Connectivity Kits such as the Team-X one only works with versions lower than 78 correct?

Just a quick question. What's the best way to get notified or the best area to check once a new firmware has been released? I'm dreaded over the 0078FW and i'm not about to attempt removing the chip lol smile.gif

Should I just keep checking this thread every few days?

BTW, excellent work to everyone on "the scene". You guys rock smile.gif

Thanks.

Hey guys great work you all do here............We're all very gratefull.  I'm hoping somebody with a Hitachi 0078 drive reads this post.  I was looking closely on the back of my 360 which has the 0078 drive and I noticed above where you plug the power cord into the back a 13 digit number outlined in a rectangle box that ends in 0078 on mine (you'll see Japanese writing with English near the area I'm talking about).  I'm hoping someone else with the Hitachi 0078 Drive could look and see if the 13 digit number also ends in 0078 on theirs as well or if this is just a coincidense on mine.  I know it's a longshot but this could be a way to identify the drive from the outside.   Thanks and keep up the good work!

i've got a 0078 on the back of mine, and it's a hitachi based on tray (altho i haven't opened it yet)--and it was made in aug 06, so i think it's high chance i've got a 78...

Hi All,

I am a newbie in replaceing FW for x360, so far the only thing I know for sure that I have one with LG drive.
Of course I will check the earlier mentioned number identification, and hoping that I do not have a v78 built in, since I have no tools to rewrite the FW with a rom programming device.

In case anybody has some info about when was v78 first built into the console then it could help for (I guess) lot's of us to breath up (or not).

Thx 4 the developers of these FWs, they are doing a great job
