I have an 0059DJ Hitachi flashed with Maximus-Garyopa 2.3 Stealth Rev. 2 and an MS25 Samsung with Xtreme 4.2.  Backups burned with NEC 3530A on Verbatim.

GOW Backup on Samsung ---> WORKS
GOW Backup on Hitachi ---> Unplayable Disc

COD3 Backup on Samsung ---> WORKS
COD3 Backup on Hitachi ---> Unplayable Disc

SOME of my backups that work on the MS25 _DO_ work on the 0059DJ (including Tiger Woods 07).

I'm thinking of calibrating the POT on the 0059DJ.  My question is, has anyone had success doing a POT Calibration to fix the "Unplayable Disc" error on a Hitachi, or is it only effective for an "Open Tray" error?

What brand dvd's are you using?

got a Hitachi 59d.. with the latest OPA firmware..

no probs whatsoever...

plays backups that have been made on Verbatim DL+R on
either a Plextor 716 burner, Pioneer Burner, and the Hitachi
Burner that's in my Dell Dimension 9150...

sounds like you got a shitty burner or bad media..

Thanks for the input, dynt.  I will definitely try it.
LOL!!!  Are you serious?????  Did you read the part in my initial post about how these VERBATIM backups ___WORK___ on my Samsung MS25?  Every backup I have ever attempted with my burner works on my MS25.  They unfortunately do not all work on my 0059DJ, so I just wanted to see if anyone with similar problems on Hitachi could offer any insight (in regards to successful POT calibration).

The MS25 drive will read almost anything, it's the hitachi drive that has problems with some media/burners. I know for a fact the NEC burner wont burn good backups for the hitachi drive. If you updated the firmware to the latest and are using verbatim dl media it may work. If you've already done this, i could guarentee 100% that with the Pioneer burner, these will boot INSTANTLY. My backups from my Plextor NEVER worked even today with the latest firmware. Got the 111d Pioneer and i havent burned a coaster in MONTHS.

Pioneer 111d (stock firmware)
verbatim dl burned @ 8x
Hitachi 47dj w/ opa xtreme 2.2

NEVER A PROBLEM.

P.S. The POT calibration will decrease the life span of your drive guarenteed. There is NO NEED to do that, just use the right burner and it'll work fine.

ive successfully pot tweaked my hitachi drive as had similar problems, at first i thought it was the media / writer combo i was using (nec 3520 latest firmware and aone or bulkpak dl discs), so bought a pioneer 111d (complete waste of money imo), still had the same probs, so opened up my xbox, tried the rubberband trick first and no joy, so got my multimeter out, laser was set at 3.18, so lowered down to 2.9, getting better, but still have some probs, tweaked down to 2.65, and no joy, so am now running at 3.48 and works like a treat with certain media, best results ive had is with mirror fullface prinatables, work like a charm, but still no joy with the aones and bulkpak, so ive now got about 15 coasters from them

anyways, am now back using my nec writer with mirror discs and all is good with pot at 3.48, odd that it runs better that way, but im not complaining!

yessss... RESULTS ....

i got myself a decent working multimeter...

opened up the dvd player ... again

Got the value of the pot which was 3,73 ...

I tweaked it down to 3.3 to start with, a save value ...

Put the drive half together.... hooked it up...

All my problem backups which run on Samsung but not on my hitachi are now working flawlessly ...

Pot meter adjustment > SUCCES ..

Hope this helps ....

p.s ... i have trouble backups on verbatim and platinum and the issue seemed game related...

some of my backups worked perfectly on my drive, on platinum and verbatim media..

some games however, seemed to have trouble running.. on verbatim or platinum...

Splintercell Da (pal) i couldnt get running with the combinations:
platinum - nec burner
verbatim - nec burner
AND platinum - pioneer 111
verbatim - pioneer 111

Neither of those backup booted ... not once have i been able to start this game...
Now all 4 of those work ...

Luckily for me i didnt trash the discs... was good testing material ...

Some of my other games needed multiple tries of eject insert to get the game working ...
Now everytthing boots.. without problems..

Pot adjustment will save me the frustration of rebooting ever and ever... wish i had found this earlier, my original splinter cell isnt looking 100% anymore sad.gif

Thanks to everyone...

Thanks so much for the input scienide, and congrats on your successful pot adjustment.  I'll definitely adjust mine once I get my potentiometer back from a friend who borrowed it.

Yeah.. but the 2.5 value someone is talking about is way to low i guess..

my results with 3.3 are perfect... i've seen other original hitachi's perform the same way, so i guess the value of 3.4 would be a good value to start with ...

Keep me updated on your results....

have you tried burning them on a pioneer 111d, had the same problem ages ago with all my games, burnt on an NEC drive (3540a / 4570a)  all worked fine on sammsy, but wouldnt work on hitachis (well on rare occasions would load, but then fail).

swapped to a pioneer 111d, working perfect ever since.

thought this was old news chaps.

as for everyone elses problems, with gow etc etc , not sure, but never had probs with any game, since changing to pioneer

Here's the latest and final update.  I ordered a 111D which should arrive tomorrow.  But just for the heck of it, I decided to attempt a backup of GOW using ImgBurn instead of CloneCD.  And you know what?

It works on my Hitachi.

And so does COD3, and everything else I own.  I can't help but feel a little silly -- after many coasters and many pot calibrations -- for not trying ImgBurn before ordering the new DVD burner.  Looks like I'll be sending it back to Newegg opened, because my NEC-3530A is more than compatible with my Hitachi drive as it turns out.

Thanks all for your help.

That's odd, the opposite worked for me.  I have a samsung ms28 with xtreme 4.2 and hitachi with max garyopa 2.3.  Verbatims burned @8x with clonecd or imgburn work perfectly with either drives.  I use pioneer 111D burner.  i ran out of verbatim and was trying to use some memorex 2.4x form office depot.  At first I used imgburn and only the sammy would read them.  Then used clonecd and now can succesfully read in both drives.
Why would clonecd or imgburn be different if using manual layer break on imgburn?
