"unplayable Disc" Error On Hitachi (gow, Cod3)
« on: November 13, 2006, 11:08:00 PM »

I have an 0059DJ Hitachi flashed with Maximus-Garyopa 2.3 Stealth Rev. 2 and an MS25 Samsung with Xtreme 4.2.  Backups burned with NEC 3530A on Verbatim.

GOW Backup on Samsung ---> WORKS
GOW Backup on Hitachi ---> Unplayable Disc

COD3 Backup on Samsung ---> WORKS
COD3 Backup on Hitachi ---> Unplayable Disc

SOME of my backups that work on the MS25 _DO_ work on the 0059DJ (including Tiger Woods 07).

I'm thinking of calibrating the POT on the 0059DJ.  My question is, has anyone had success doing a POT Calibration to fix the "Unplayable Disc" error on a Hitachi, or is it only effective for an "Open Tray" error?

Hi Pokster G...

I am noticing the same thing. My friends have samsung drives and they read everything perfectly and without hickups ...

I am getting problems with some games.... Gears of war i wouldnt be able to tell you.. it isnt out yet, but splintercell DA is giving me trouble in the hitachi, and TDU isnt fail safe either. They work, but it takes multiple tries where the samsung drive reads them perfectly...

I was thinking about :

1. Pot tweaking, but i havent found any tutorials for the hitachi drive.
2. Buy a replacement DVD... i looked on the internet, but i  cannot find a dutch store which sells them ....

If i dont find a replacement drive online, i think i will try the pot calibration this weekend when i got the time....

Hope to hear some responses from other persons....

With kind regards

Hi...

tried the rubberband thing in my lunch break so i didnt have that much time...

must have done something wrong there i guess... I used a wide strip and then i had to cut it down to a very small strip of rubber.... no result yet...

same thing... i insert the cd... it makes a grinding noise and i am not able to eject the disc afterwards...

But as i said, i didnt have that much time.. will try again this evening...

The strip i used the last time was very narrow, and i was afraid i would break it while making a knot but it didnt....

Anybody knows if u need to screw the case back on to test?

Will try this evening.... i even have a multi meter at home to to that if i go crazy with that rubberband thing...

will let u know results....

Before you guys go off ignoring me. Try Birdy 2.2 fixed. Just try it and see if those games now work. I think there is a problem with the media patch in opa.

POT tweaking the Hitachi is exactly the same as the Samsung. The drives are nearly identical, physically. Once you get to the laser head, use a multimeter (set to 20k Ohms) to chech the resistance, and adjust the pot accordingly. A lower number results in a stronger laser. Tuts I've seen say don't go below 2.8, but mine's at 2.5 and working great(the actual pot for dvd calibration broke off, so I've got the CD pot jumpered to it so they share the same value). I'm not worried about burning out my laser, cause I've got another smile.gif

ive pot tweaked at least 7 boxes now all round the 2.7 to 2.9 ohm mark its the best way to solve open tray messages and will read a bigger variety of brands of dls

I don't have any insight to the problem, I'm just adding that I have the same problem.

Hitachi V47 flashed with GaryOpa 2.2

I'm having problems playing backups of COD3 and GOW.

COD3 plays for a a bit (30min to an hour) then will finally crash which loading a map (30min into the game or so).  Upon a reboot I get the 'unreadable disc' error.

GOW bites the dust right after the Game rating screen.

If I let the xbox sit for a few hours, it will allow me to play again for a short period of time, at which it will then repeat the errors above.  "Unreadable Disc"

I'm interested in checking the POT and/or buying a new/replacement laser.

Do you use the same points to tweak as in the Samsung guide?

Got the same problem with GoW, havent tried CoD 3 yet but will do, i did although manage to load gears, one time just by ejecting and reinserting it over and over till it worked, second time tried running an original, exiting it after it fully loaded to its menu and then exiting to dashboad and loading the gears backup and it worked again. So anyone is welcome to extensively test this method as i don't have the time...

Personally i dont recommend the pot calibration as it does work, theres probably just some FW mess-up that will get resolved soon now that everyone is talking about these errors.

i dont know about the rubberband mod....

i've tried making several rubberbands.. about 20 i tried...
Does this actually work on a hitachi ? I tried several pieces of variable thicknes, but it has to be really narrow or the drive will make horrible noises ...

With a real real narrow one, i could the drive to work as normally without making weird noises. But... no go with the hard to play backups

If that rubberband thing is working on my hitachi, i better try something else with spacer rings and stuff

I got the drive open at the moment.. so im gonna check out that birdie thingie someone talked about.. and if that doesnt work tweak the laser ...

I modded some of my friends xboxes... and all my bad working backups seem to run instantly on their xboxes....

Samsung seems to have best performance until now, but most hitachi's seem to work better than mine....

I'll let u know later about my results....

Okay... seems we've gotten a little off topic here.  My point was that POT calibration worked for me on my MS25 to improve "Open Tray" errors.  And my question was, has anybody used POT tweaking on a Hitachi drive to lessen the frequency of "Unplayable Disc" errors?

yes done 7 hitachis pot tweak definately works

1. vastly decreases open tray/unplayable disc errors
2. increases detection of differant media
3. tweak between 2.7-2.9
