rubbre gloves can generate static electricity, which may kill your box.
Unplug the box and wait a couple hours for the Caps to discharge, then you should be good to go. (without the gloves).

If possible don't touch it at all. I know some things can't be avoided, but whenver I have to mess with stuff like that I normally use a wooden dowel or something, call me paranoid

Unplugging it for a few hours will not drain capacitors

It is true that the caps in the power supply will hold a charge for a while, but they do loose there charge over time. The charge is relativly small... If you do get bit, it isn't enough to do major damage...

I have never been bitten by an unpluged power supply. Just don't touch the parts you don't have to...

If you are realy paranoid, let it sit overnight...

QUOTE (telexen @ Jul 22 2004, 01:28 AM)
The capacitor can actually hold enough juice to kill you

NOTHING in the xbox can kill you when unplugged except under exceptional circumstances
  • extremely frail and ready to die anyway
  • shorting out the cap to your exposed heart or brain (yuck)
  • zapping your pacemaker or portable defribulator (sp?)
  • blunt force trauma with the whole box or (blunt) components
  • which leads to: trauma from the non blunt components (kinda screws up the board though)
If you are healthy and get zapped by the box the worst that will happen is a cut from jerking your hand away and some sore muscles where you got zapped.

its just 110 volts that aint gonna kill you for the ammount that anythgin int he xbox can retain let alone a little voltage that the caps have. unplug it. press the power button a few times you hear the ps uncharge poke it once more and if you get shocked ...then you get to make sure your nerves still work. nothign will kill you ... hell even if you got caught in a 15amp AC line it would reset your heart a little but not kill you unless you had the want to die and didnt let go. any moron will instantly remove there hand from a zap and your all good. or you could stand on a wood block while using that wood stick and use fiberglass gloves. or a cherry picker on a ground isolated van, but then you woudl have to put your xbox in a tree to work on it. that might look funny.

if it doesnt always work, then when the power cord is unpluged, n u press the power button, the lights blink, n then it turns off. but when u do it again, they dont blink, meaning there is no power in the psu anymore.

What about grounding wrist straps?  Don't they work?

AHH so many things said wrong.

1) Pressing the power button a few times may appear the xbox is totally discharged, but  there may still be some caps to get ya.
2) That doesn't really matter because I touch my psu all the time.  I've never got shocked.  Except the one time it was plugged in.  It kinda hurt, but it was far from fatal.
3) Think about touching an electric fence,  these things are powerful... You don't die.
4) The anti static wrist band isn't going to prevent you from being shocked, it's only going to help you not shock your xbox parts.

Umm I think that's it for now.  You're best bet is to do what SpudGunMan and headshot are saying and Unplug it.. and press the power button a few times.  This will decharge about everything you can possibly decharge. (without going into some indepth decharging process).

l/..  Peace

they help you ground out and get shocked more hehe (aside form the saving your static parts)

however just a comment about them... i have been in the consumer computer market for 10 years ... i have never ever put on a wrist band and have never lost one of the 10k+ computers i have worked with due to static, i woudl like to see it ruin something. i know someone has a story but if your gonna work on yoru xbox you inavertantly touch the case before you touch any chips thus causing any build up to leave you anyway -so a wristband is goofy for anyone not in a clean room at intell or nasa.
