Oh, and I would count on a banhammer coming down around the time Gears ships.

I wager that is false.

I dont think m$ will start banning ....... if that was their intention they would have already banned the consoles which were affected during the update. After all ...... even the modded consoles still have to pay for the live subscriptions, arcade games etc ....... and with the ps3 and the wii both imminent do m$ really want to risk losing subscribers and the fees that come with them. The biggest console war for a long time is looming and i think m$ will want to booster sales, and they have already started to clamp down with the glue over the latest console versions ....... i think they will prefer to keep the custom rather than investing time finding ways to block something which the modders will always find a way round anyway ....... m$ have bigger fish to worry about for the time being at least.

I think MS is just testing the waters right now.  They are implementing some basic code to try and detect drive and firmware modifications and disabling a segment of the consoles that they feel have been modified so they can measure their success rate.  I wouldn't be surprised if they start slowly adding additional detecting mechanisms over time and disabling consoles accordingly.  Seems like it makes sense to do it incrementally in order to reduce the likelyhood of improperly disabling a large number consoles at one time.  They already botched this basic protection measure (w/ refurbished consoles) and had to patch it, so you can imagine how many consoles would have been improperly disabled if they implemented even more factors.

Pirates still buy downloadable content and things through the XBL marketplace. They will not ban.

Seems to me that if nothing else, MS has managed to sew considerable confusion and nervousness which makes the prospect of doing this priate hack far less tempting to your average joe. That combined with the glue htey added, makes it far less likely an average person will try this.

The "average Joe" wouldn't attempt the DVD firmware hack in the first place.  It's a fairly complicated process that the non-technical person wouldn't have a clue about doing.  This might, however, discourage people who are undecided about whether or not they will flash their firmware.

I may be being a touch simplistic here, but am I right in thinking that this problem occurs basically because all of commodore's releases are based on the ms25 model, so if somebody were to port xtreme to the ms28 this issue would no longer exist ?

when they say the E71 error only effects new or referbished consoles, what it their definetion of new??  a date would be nice.  also, i dont connect mine to the internet so i obviously havent updated, nor did i plan on it.  now correct me if i am wrong but from things im reading games are going to require these updates be installed in order to play them?  NFS carbon i hear installs things on your box, is this just something the game needs or is it a dash update?  not to worried if i get the E66 cause i can fix that, its E71 that scares me.

All 4.x releases of Xtreme are based on the MS28 firmware.

I had a Hitachi Drive 59dj and we replaced it with 47D after 59dj bricked. After the update it's giving E66 error.Do you think that going back to original FW would handle this?
I have no chance to try right now since it belongs to a friend of mine.He is taking it to me tomorrow.
I'm really scared if we can't use 47D after the update because the other drive is totally bricked.

Why does everyone keep saying the E66 is "bricking" their dvd drive? From everything I have seen all it does is prevent the dash/games from booting. All you have to do is flash to a compliant firmware (whether stock or hacked) and it starts working again, right? I think so, so you aren't bricked unless you get E71...

Has anyone without a hacked firmware tried to do the Fall update and then flash the drive with a modified firmware?

Ya, I did it yesterday.. my firmware was unmodded.. I did the update.. course I have a november 2005 xbox 360 with a hitachi drive

I then modified my firmware in the hitachi (46) for the 1st time ever with no problems.. used the Xecuter X360 USB kit after having a bit of issues trying to flash it without one... (I decided buying the 360usb was better than dicking around with serial ATA chipsets and mode b for a week)

flashed with the latest (Maximus-Garyopa_XTRM-HITACHI_v2_3_Stealth_Rev2)...made backups of like 6 or os 360 discs I had with xbox backup creator, burned them on ridita printable discs with a modified NEC and uv resistant ink.. and played the games late into the night.. some on xbox live too.. no trouble.. no problems.. no nothing..

From now on, I look at it this way.. I really don't give a shit if I get banned someday.. If I do I'll buy another 360 just for using with Live

In the meatime I wont apply any dashboard or game updates until some guinea pig here tries it 1st and reports back what happens.. hopefully that way If something bad happens and backups stop working I'll know not to do it and all my backups will continue to work..

If that theory gets flawed and everything I got going stops working.. oh well.. it's the price you pay for staying on top of the mod scene and an accepted risk to me for playing the game..

I just like modding shit.. I'm 32 and I've modded everthing I could ever get my hands on.. every console that could be modded.. the tivo.. my motorcyles.. my cars.. whatever... It's a hobby and I really enjoy messing with shit... ALMOST AS MUCH AS LIKE PARTYING, DRINKIN, AND GIRLS but not quite.

I am basically the guy that researches the shit out a project before I start.. I read post after post, ask no dumb questions, and figure shit out on my own

Too bad more people are not like that.. it sure would relieve tension from stupid redundant questions in forums all over the internet..

Sure I have destroyed a lot of shit attempting projects way over my head but that is how you learn and how you get good at shit like this.. It cost me a lot of money just learning to solder and ruining shit cause I sucked...but now I am as good as anybody and few projects scare me off

It's probably worth mentioning that since I did this update my 360 has crashed twice, which it never did before.

Possibly coincidence, but it struck me as odd.
