What still remains to be explained is how ms25 owners are getting e66 with 4.x firmware.  It is a 'drive upgrade' and I don't think everyone who has this scenario has swapped their drives.

I doubt that they are simply storing MODEL, FW ORIG VERSION.  They are probably doing some checksums or encoding to come up with values identifying the combo.  This code probably has some logical errors in it's routines and perhaps differences in the fw patches have caused false negatives in their routines.

I beleive if this article is close to correct, MS is setting the stage for a new drive to be placed in all new systems.

They atarting the process in the hopes to block users from swapping DVD drives with "modable" ones.

I beleive they can;t really do much with this generation but are looking to stop this in the near future.

Ok ok just to clear some things up for my self,
I have a H-lg 47dj drive but im gonna put in a replacement H-lg 46dg drive, I updated my dash already, if i copy my orig key from my 47dj and paste it to the 46dg then slap it in my box im i most likely to get an error? or do i have to flash the 46 to a 47? Is that even possible? If so how the hell do u do that? Members already did something similar to this and confirmed working and others with errors but has anyone yet done what i plan to do?
Cheers.

Update for me...I have a launch-day 360 that originally had a Hitatchi.  That drive died about a month or two ago and I replaced it with a Samsung.  Just did the Fall update and no problems here!!  smile.gif   Samsung is flashed with 4.2a...I don't know if it is 25 or 28 but I guess that again confirms that swapping drives is possible at least for some.

Ok I'm beginning to wonder

IF you originally had a HITACHI drive in your system and it faiiled and you placed a samsung in there you don't get the error.

BUT if you had a sammy in there orginally and change out for a later (or earlier) firmware revision of your sammy drive OR a hitachi drive then your chances of e66 are greatly increased.

OK next summation, I have a friend who used to work repairing the old boxes at a repair facility, m$ authorized, they repaired and reprogrammed boards with new eeproms etc when the board was fixed therefore putting it back into good stock.  I guarentee M$ is not throwing repaired mobos away, they are repairing them but need to reprogram when these parts are used.  Something in this programming has the firm check or crc check for those drives.

I know I'm rambling but I'm thinking...

While reading this thread I found this process about resetting to factory settings.
http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=559639

So if I can got back to my factory settings and clear everything
wouldn't it be possible to do this on my MS25 (currently 3.2),
then FW update to 4.2 to make it an MS28.
Then download all the dashboard updates it would think that I had a MS28 all along.
i.e there would be no info on my console to indicate I ever had a MS25.

Just wondering if the last 2 updates from MS have recorded any info
on my console that could use at a later date. Maybe resetting the factory
settings will not clear this data possibly captured in the previous update.

Hello. I bought my unit in march 2006. I'm running xtreme3.0 firmware. I have a sammy drive.I have done every update. I just did the the fall update and my machine is still running fine. I can still boot my backups and go online. How can you tell if you have a ms25 or ms28 drive?

Here's a thought...

From near the beginning, the modded firmwares were created to disguise the fact that they were modded.  The 360 could query the drive, and ask the drive what firmware it was running.  After the mods, MS can't really trust the answer it gets.  As we all know, the motherboard and DVD drive have unique keys burned into them from the factory.  Perhaps at the same time, they burn into the motherboard some kind of info on what kind of firmware the drive SHOULD have.  Or maybe MS simply has an algorithm that it can use to tell what firmware SHOULD be on its drive.  Your drive is an MS25, the motherboard expects MS25.  Your drive is an MS28, the motherboard expects MS28.  Before, this was not an issue, as the dashboard only checked the key.  With this new update, it might be that the motherboard is getting pickier about what drive is connected to it.  The motherboard knows it should have a 28, so the dashboard queries the drive, and gets back some CRC info stating that it's a 25 drive.  BAM!  It knows you've at least done something...E66.

What would be a good test, would be to take two 360's...an MS25 and an MS28.
1. Put 3.3 on the 28.
2. Put 3.3 on the 25.
3. Update both consoles.
4. Expected result: The 25 console is fine, 28 is bricked.
5. Take the 28 drive, put the 25 console's key into it with the same 3.3 firmware.
6. Put that 28 drive into the 25 console, and see what happens.
7. If the 28 drive with 25 firmware, and the 25 console's key burned into it, works fine...then you know for a fact that somehow the motherboard is expecting a certain version of DVD firmware.

All right so from that last post it is possible the DVD-ROM info to compare
is stored on the motherboard or similar so it will not be erased with a console factory reset.

How do i know what if i have the spring update or not.  I am afraid to update to the fall update.  I have never logged on xbox live as I do not have time to really play games.  I have the original firmware in my 360 and my dashboard says 2.0.2858.0.  Does this mean i have had the spring update and I can "safely" do the fall update once new games come out with the fall update?

Seems to me that if nothing else, MS has managed to sew considerable confusion and nervousness which makes the prospect of doing this priate hack far less tempting to your average joe. That combined with the glue htey added, makes it far less likely an average person will try this.

Seems like that is accomplishing a lot with a simple change.

Oh, and I would count on a banhammer coming down around the time Gears ships.
