Ya, I did it yesterday.. my firmware was unmodded.. I did the update.. course I have a november 2005 xbox 360 with a hitachi drive

Hey, thanks for your answer, DoTsTerR. It seems Microsoft didn't "block" firmwares, preventing further modifications, which is good. A confirmation on that by a Toshiba-Samsung owner would be nice, though.

It's probably worth mentioning that since I did this update my 360 has crashed twice, which it never did before.

Possibly coincidence, but it struck me as odd.

Spark, when did that happen? Mine crashes a lot with Splinter Cell: Double Agent, but that's an issue with the game itself. Clearing the hard disk's cache seems to solve the problem, but I haven't tried that yet.

Quick question: does dashboard updates come bundled with games, after they're released? I was wondering two things: 1) if Gears of War does indeed come with the Fall update in the disk, will it be the pre-fix or post-fix one? Bad news if it's the first option. Unless downloading the update via Live prevents the disk from trying to install the one that came bundled with it. 2) If software updates do come with game disks, can they "crash" your system or that's some sort of online verification procedure (checking firmwares, bricking modded ones, etc.)?

Ya I probably left way more info than needed in that post but it least it lays out all the stuff I am doing/using and all the success I am having

might help someone or give someone a path to follow...

As for lockups.. The only time I ever had trouble was this past summer when playing oblivion.. my 360 would lock up 3-5 times a day probably when playing it.. and yes my 360 had good air flow and my apartment wasn't crazy hot either.. I got air conditioning and live in upstate ny so the weather is never over 90 very often outside regardless.

Anyway, I bought a Nyko Intercooler and that pretty much helped a ton.. I dont think it locked up twice since then and both times still when laying oblivion.. never any other game. I only use the intercooler when playing that game cause its pretty noisy.

I did try the clear cache trick, but my lockups seem to be heat related.. though who really knows.

They are sitting the gooses in a line, now they are coding the shotgun to kill them.. lol

Now that you can't DOWNGRADE, what happens if they make an UPGRADE program for the drives? Locked out until you can figure out what they changed? not simple for everyone to do.

Upgrade the 'modded' drives to a new revision that can't be hacked.. you can't downgrade them - E66 error..
Update the drives from factory so you can't swap out the drive or mod the new revisions.. E66 error.

Of course the new revisions 'could' be hacked, but at what extent will they go to keep upgrading/changing them?? There is also media checks, games played on the system lists, and a thousand other ways microsoft have 'designed' the 360 from the ground up so it 'can't' be cracked..

Basically if you fubar your 360 drive now you are up shit creek..

Replacement drives? That's something else we should talk about as it's now probably no longer possible to swap from a Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L to Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 (or the other way around) as the model of your drive would no longer match the model stored on your 360.

This is not true, i have Hitachi as original and sammy as hacked, and with the new fall update i updated with original hitachi, then turned off and threw in my sammy and it booted fine.

I have a question? people who's sammys give the E66, were the drives patched before with a hacked firmware, run previous updates (data collection possibly), then upgraded again to newer firmware/hack, and then failed with the latest patch?
just trying to find a difference between the sucess & fails of the samsungs. Also because I have a v25 that I patched with the first hack avalible, ran online getting updates as they came, just recently updated to 4.2/v28 and right now/ still canceling the latest update till I get more data.

so maybe a v25 that's been online and patched before must stay a v25, but one that's always been a v28 or at least was v28 before it went online is ok?

With the lastest C4eva patch the console can workout wether the f/w is patched despite stealth. IE games run normal speed and backups faster the console can workout wether its pached or not. Solution make both games and backups run @ normal speed

Solution to the above: Learn some grammar!

Solution to c4e firmware: None required. Games (Backups AND Originals) run at normal speed. What are you on about???

Let me just say Im glad I came accros this forum as it seems very useful and I look forward to spending some time here when my schedule allows. I just pickeed up a 360 and have a newer model (lot# 0635) Team wzho. From asking a few questions On another site, Ive been advised that I should return the hitachi unit. I found an older one with lot number 0625 on the box and the older game titles on the back like call of duty 2. After a look at www.360drives.com it looks like it might have a ms28.
My question is based on these new findings with this update what is my best bet, return the hitachi one and pick up the older samsung unit. Also If i do get the older unit and I want to play my gears of war and ridge racer games, say the system wants me to do a update, would it be wise to wait till later to update.
I plan to mod but I don't know much about it yet. When I spoke with a mod guy the other day he told me I was best to get the older samsung drive and a nme mod chip so I could still play live.
Please excuse my extream noobieness to this, I have to decide what consol I want tomorow before they take the system of hold for me at the retailer.
Thanks smile.gif

Is there anyone *at all* who applied the fall update successfully, on a 360 that originally had a samsung ms28 but swapped that for a hitachi? I bricked my ms28 a while ago when flashing it, and want to put a hitachi in now (couldn't find a samsung fast enough). I hadn't installed the fall update yet, as the ms28 was running xtreme3.3, so I tried upgrading it to xtreme4.2b, which bricked it. The original DVD drive manufacturing date was May 2006.

Hey just wanted to post a BIG thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. I had a 360 with Sammy ms-25 bought it about 2 weeks ago. Flashed it to 4.2a and I thought I was good to go.

Didn't realize that the version I used was not REV 1, so when I connected to live and did the update, boom, got the E66 error. Fortunately I knew exactly where to check for info and this thread was a lifesaver!

I would suggest that in the future when C4A or whomever makes a revision to a firmware, that they increment the firmware #, just to eliminate any confusion. If the firmware would have been numbered 4.2.1 it would have been a little clearer. I'm not complaining or anything, but since we can't link to firmware on this board it would make it easier when searching the web/usenet/torrents.

Once I updated to 4.2arev1 everything worked great. Thanks a lot again!

Okay so I have had my 360 for almost a full year now no troubles so a dashboard update comes on 2 days ago and stupid me says ok I should have read before opting to get it that very night booted up to the 3 lights of doom twice and then ok again for the next day played it for about an hour twice yesterday no troubles today yes it freezes and 1 light error 71 comes on and then boots and freezes again I am screwed now whatÂ’s my next move call them even though I opened and flashed my drive, will they fix this even now? I would gladly pay if needed oh no is there away I can reverse this update? WHAT do I do?

I updated Gears of War the day after when things worked ok so that game has the buggy fall update on it anyway so I read.

Now just the rings of DOOM no boot at all this is bad real bad
