Ya, I did it yesterday.. my firmware was unmodded.. I did the update.. course I have a november 2005 xbox 360 with a hitachi drive
Hey, thanks for your answer, DoTsTerR. It seems Microsoft didn't "block" firmwares, preventing further modifications, which is good. A confirmation on that by a Toshiba-Samsung owner would be nice, though.

It's probably worth mentioning that since I did this update my 360 has crashed twice, which it never did before.
Possibly coincidence, but it struck me as odd.
Spark, when did that happen? Mine crashes a lot with Splinter Cell: Double Agent, but that's an issue with the game itself. Clearing the hard disk's cache seems to solve the problem, but I haven't tried that yet.
Quick question: does dashboard updates come bundled with games, after they're released? I was wondering two things: 1) if Gears of War does indeed come with the Fall update in the disk, will it be the pre-fix or post-fix one? Bad news if it's the first option. Unless downloading the update via Live prevents the disk from trying to install the one that came bundled with it. 2) If software updates do come with game disks, can they "crash" your system or that's some sort of online verification procedure (checking firmwares, bricking modded ones, etc.)?
