thanks for the post but now i am REALLY confused on how to flash the firmware. I know how to set up the extreme boot maker. I still have yet to open the xbox to see if it is a 28 or a 25. I realize i have to edit samhack and samread if it is m28. How do i know if my dvd drive is mtk based? which nvidia nforce 4 serial ata do i choose, there are 2 available? Do i use 42a or 42b? How do i get my original firmware so i can back it up? what are all the other files in the firmware .rar file?

Firmware version will be on top of the DVD drive when you open the XboX 360 case.

Choose hack firmware that you will flash the drive with
choose custom MTKFlash pick your SATA controller, and

the sata port on the via sata card the port towards

Connect a PC CD or DVD drive on the VIA Sata card IDE channel

Boot into DOS with xbox 360 off
when at command prompt

Extreme boot maker prepares a usb or floppy boot disc specifically matching your Sata chipset.
0. Insert floppy or USB drive into pc
1. Run extreme boot maker
2. open hacked firmware bin file
3. tick "use custom mtkflash"
4. select "via" sata controller from drop down menu
5. click "detect ID"
6. Select USB drive, drive letter
7. tick "format and make bootable disk"
hit prepare.

Reading and Flashing

Unplug xbox360's dvd drive sata cable
Disconnect your pc sata harddisc cable and plug in into the xbox360 dvd drive.
Make sure you have a cable to stop "floating ground" going to both pc and 360 chassis.
Make sure Video cable from 360 plugged into xbox 360 and 360 power cable plugged in.
NOTE: The following Sections 7 and 9 can be missed out on a ms25 flashed Toshiba/Samsung TSH943 drive as you don't need to turn the xbox360 on and off.
The following "bad flash recovery method" only works with via sata chipsets and is specifically for Toshiba/Samsung TSH943 with the original MS28 firmware.
*THE READING*
1. Turn on pc first
2. Boot from usb (or floppy) disc made with extreme boot maker
3.Connect 360 SATA Cable and video cable When in Dos switch on xbox360
4. AT PROMPT ENTER samread xxxxxxx xxxxx (xx is your xbox serial number)
5. Hit enter
6. MTKflash will run A list of drives should come up asking you to select drive *DON'T ENTER ANYTHING*
7. TURN OFF XBOX360
8. Select sata card, hit enter and wait 10 seconds
9. TURN ON XBOX360
10. As soon as you turn it on it will start reading the 360 firmware.
11. With 360 on unplug sata cable from back of it
12. Power off PC and then 360.

If you followed instructions, the first time you flashed
your drive, you should have your orig.bin backed up
Make sure this file is named orig.bin and put it in
the xtreme42 folder. Run the "MakeX42b" or "MakeX42a" file
and a new file will show up as either X42A.bin or X42B.bin
This is your hacked 4.2 firmware with the key injected into it.
Flash this to your drive using the same procedure you flashed with the first time.
X360SAM dumps the firmware that is currently on the drive,
extracts the DVD drive key and hexedits that into the xtreme firmware.
Well, if your DVD drive is working, then obviously the key is
in the right place. So, when it extracts the key,
it will work just fine. It makes no difference whether
the key is extracted from the original firmware
or a pre-hacked drive, because the keys are the same.

I have a XboX 360 with a Hitachi drive latest garyopa firmware v47
I made all my backups using a pioneer 111 and verbatims,
which wouldn't work,I tried datawrites which would just about read.
I then tweaked the pot down to 2.8 ohms from 3.6
but still the games would freeze more often than not
in frustration I ripped out a samsung dvd drive out
of my computer and took the laser out tweaked it to 2.9
now it will read every disc I throw at it and never freezes.
So any one having real problems reading discs just swap the
laser out some are definately better than others.
The samsung drive was a Samsung sd616e the beauty
was i put the old Hitachi laser back in the Samsung
PC DVD drive and that still works.
what made me check was
I have a Samsung SH-D162C The drive for
kreons firmware for backing up discs and that
laser will fit also I would have used that
but the drive took some finding and the other
drive only cost $20 which is a lot cheaper than
a replacement lens I have tried 6 backups for about
an hour a
time and not one Hickup.
