I think I'll wait until c4eva implements the dual method for getting the drive into firmguard bypass.  It would be nice to have a couple of options in case one isn't working for you.  Plus it's a pain to open both of my 360's for every release smile.gif  But c4eva, keep 'em coming man.  We all appreciate your hard work.
Cal

If you've allready flashed to a Xtreme 4.x your still going to have use the enable0800.iso to upgrade to the newer firmware.

Hitachi is being left too long - its falling behind. We want to play PGA07 original!!

I agree 100%. Garyopa and the others are very busy at the moment, and C4eva stated that he won't be working on the hitachi anymore. Well, C4Eva... you have a perfect Samsung firmware right now. Can't you just help the hitachi owners getting the same results?

yap, just read the hitachi eject tray to modeb. If the next version of samsung firmware implement the same method to unlock the drive then probably it will be easier for those who wanna flash. End of the day, personal preferences ...

I would like an answer to this also before I flash. I only use the slower version and I don’t want to flash the wrong firmware.

I guess I could flash both ones to see for myself, but I do not like flashing more than I have too.

I can only speak for what's the current status of my console.

Flashed  from 4.0a (fast)  to 4.2a (fast)

Platinums run great as always. (fast speed!)
Verbatim's run great when console is cold. all of them boot.

When console get's warmed up a little..
Platinums still run great as always.
verbatims won't boot.... Open Tray error.

So i think, only solutions is ... search for best media to fit your drive or do the rubber band trick ?

QUOTE(manh @ Oct 24 2006, 11:46 PM) *

what is the whole ordeal behind this new  SS retrieval in 4.2? i dont really understand what its doing, can someone please clarify for me what this whole  SS retrieval benefit us from?

does this mean we can just do a backup of the original without patching and also play xbox1 backup without patching and burning them on dvd dl?

It is to try and fix the "open tray error" that people have been fixing with the rubber band trick.  Reading through a few of these posts its seems like people are still getting the error.

Also EA put a dummy ss on the retail copy of Tiger Woods which was causing the original to not boot when played on a Hitachi with OPA fw 2.2 or older.

I never had a open tray error (well once, but it was because my drive got very hot), so I personally am sticking with 4.1A

[edit] for those of you worried about burning the 0800 disk and have not yet upgraded to a 4.0+ fw just burn the disk with Clone CD and see if you can get your -4.0 fw drive recgonized in windows.  Thats how easy it is to test.  And to the guy that had the NEC 3500A earlier, I used to have one of these and it made 0800 and verb backups perfectly with clone cd at 2.4x

Your problem seems to be the 'open tray error' which happen to some and they fix by using the 'rubber-band method'. Search the forum, there is a thread on it.

Yup, from a lot of researching on these forums, it's the Open Tray error. I just don't want to strip the drive down and do the rubber band mod. Nothing against it, just something I don't want to do to the console. I'd prefer to wait until there's either a firmware fix for it, or attempt to use different media to see if that improves things. Maybe even investigate a better cooling method for the console as I'm damn sure it's heat that's the culprit. Only thing is, I don't want to move the freezer through to the livingroom to confirm my suspicions. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Does this mean that dual layer discs isn't a requirement?

No, because every game must be a complete raw untouched dump that is burned on a Dual layer disc.

Just flashed my drive from 4.1b to 4.2b and it is running perfect, nice and quiet and load times seem only a tiny bit slower but the 360 is whisper quiet now...

Thanks C4 for all your efforts.

I'm yet to flash my box, but it seems pretty obvious that the drive is overheating on DL+ media to me. (either that or the discs are getting too hot due to the laser), I guess using the 4.2b firmware will mean it may read a bit slower but a slower spinning motor will keep the head down.

Shame the dvd drive is encased because theres really little we can do to cool it, folks are even reporting verbs are getting hot now too! Saw a recharge kit in UK Asda today which has 3 fans and mounts on the side of the xbox360 case guess this may help, but kinda defeats the point of  having a quiet console....

Never tried the 4.xb firmware as I prefer it to read at the same speed as the originals, although I'll admit that I've not seen what difference the 4.xb firmware would make to loading times, though I dread to think what Dead Rising would be like with a slower read speed. I'm enjoying the game, but I'm seeing more of the little red spinning loading graphic than I am of the game so far. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I can't compare the 4.x firmware to previous releases since I only patched with v4.1a a couple of weeks ago, and then with 4.2a last night. As for the overheating, I wouldn't put it down to the drive itself, more the rather large heatsink planked right next to it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

And that's the Catch-22. Quiet console with minor downtime in between games in a major playing session, or a replica soundscape of Heathrow in yer livingroom. I know which I'd go for. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) In all honesty tho', there's not much you can do with external cooling. You either go small 'n noisy to keep the external housing in line with the console itself, or get large 'n quiet fans, with a housing to match, that doubles the size of the thing.

Or go watercooled. If you have the cash 'n confidence to do so. The first I'm outta after buying a console, and the latter I'll build up to when I have the cash to buy a replacement if I blow the current one up. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Don't tell me "dead rising" load times are worse than that of "PGR3"?? surely not??

I'm fed up waiting for pgr3 to load by the time the race starts!
