Difference Between Samhack And Mtkflash
« on: October 21, 2006, 02:02:00 PM »

Alright, so i'm pretty much ready to modify the firmware...just need to understand what the difference is between mtkflash and samhack/samread.

After looking at textbook's video, he never uses mtkflash, he uses samread (serial number) to read and dump the original firmware. Then after rebooting and what not, he uses samhack (serial number). Everythin's running fine then. However, the accompanying website tutorial, i.e. samsungv41.pdf file, uses the mtkflash.

Now, I'm reading the samsung commodore4eva firmware 4.1 Readme file and in the flashing instructions, it is instructing the reader

"Boot with standard dos boot disk with included mtkflash utility

Run "mtkflash w /m x41a.bin" or "mtkflash w /m x41b.bin"

No mention of samhack.

So what am I not seeing here? What's the difference, are there 2 progs to flash? Is mtkflash used in a way that isn't apparent to the naked eye? haha

the samread/samhack is just an autoinstaller that reads your firmware and creates a hacked firmware for you.

So if I follow the readme instructions, I can use "mtkflash w /m x41a.bin" without the samhack and serial number?

And vice versa, I can use samhack/read with the serial number, without having to use mtkflash prog?

Don´t know about the vice versa, I´ve always used mtkflash.
You can use "mtkflash w /m x41a.bin" without samhack and serial number. I say so because usage of this command implies that you can also use "mtkflash r /m orig.bin".
The thing is, in order to get a x41a or x41b.bin I need to extract my personal orig.bin, and that´s what I always did until now.
So again as an answer to your first question, you can do the whole thing using only mtkflash on your bootdisk.

- Boot Dos, read your firmware
- boot up windows, copy your FW to the directory with the .bat files, run 41a.bat or 41b.bat, copy x41a.bin or x41b.bin to your bootdisk
- boot dos again, flash your drive

I think someone who knows will answer your second question concerning samhack.

Oh no, I´m already overweight.
But what I wrote is almost 100% the readme you mentioned before (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) .

EVERYBODY!

SAMREAD/SAMHACK is using MTKFLash.  Open the .bat files in Notepad and you'll see what it is doing.  Just backup your original firmware before you do anything else.

If you want to use the SAM method,

1.  Power on PC, power on 360 at DOS
2.  SAMREAD 1234567 12345
3.  Unplug SATA cable after the fw dumps, power off the 360, then reboot PC
4.  Plug SATA cable back in and power on 360 at DOS
5.  SAMHACK 1235467 12345

If you want to follow the readme,

1.  Power on PC, power on 360 at DOS
2.  mtkflash r /m orig.bin
3.  Unplug SATA cable after the fw dumps, power off 360, reboot PC and remove floppy/usb to boot into Windows
4.  Copy the orig.bin to your xtreme41 folder and use the "make41a" or "make41b"
5.  Copy this x41a.bin or x41b.bin to your floppy/USB
6.  Reboot PC into DOS, plug in SATA cable and power on 360
7.  mtkflash w /m x41a.bin

(or mtkflash w /m x41b.bin)

Technically, the methods are identical.  Both are using MTKFlash to read/write to the firmware.  And both are using X360SAM to edit the key into the xtreme firmware.  One is doing it in DOS like it is meant to be.  The other is doing it in Windows.

That's because you either got the serial number wrong or X360SAM failed with a red warning message.
