If your drive stops reading disks, you don't have to worry about the firmware not flasshing.  It *doesn't* read discs! Who cares if you cannot flash firmware.  Replace the laser.

Cal

I think you guys are missing the point. I think the original poster was reffering to the people that have gone wrong somewhere in the creating hacked firmware stage and they get there key wrong. They still have there drive flashed with 4.x but get the error65 and cant read discs.so they cant unlock the drive to reflash properly. It is indeed a tricky problem.

i do, cause i had a floppy error, so my drive is flashed only partial (ms25)
no eject, no spinning but its locked and i can't reflash it, cause theres noway to enable 0800
seems like firmguard turns out a (bad flash) sammy killer if theres really no way to unlock it

yes i totally agree with you. i wont be using 4x firmware for that reason .i could be wrong but i am not prepared to take the chance i think i will just stick with 3x firmware.

For all of you asking about the enable0800.iso file and if it should be burned on a DVD+R or DVD+DL...burn it to a DVD+DL. I just tried burning it with a DVD+R and CloneCD, and it wouldn't work, but after I switched to a DVD+DL, everything was fine. Bitsetting was DVD-Rom for both, so that wasn't an issue.

Also..you guys using floppies are crazy. Invest in a usb flash drive smile.gif

Thanks man. I didn't want to use a DL unless I absolutely had to.

I think with the whole laser worry use the default slow read firmware and make sure you use verbatims or fujis. NO MEMOREX. put it to you this way i have had my ps2 since brand new version 4 and the laser still works minty after all theese years. Cheap media and high speed equals shirt life span on laser.

P>S i'm knockin on wood now he he

I burn all of mine with a Pioneer 111D at 2.4x with Verbatim.   I am hoping that I will never have a problem as I don't think you can get much better burns than that combo.   I use a Samsung SH-D162C to make backups.  I am not using the default slow speed firmware however.

I suppose that those scenarios are not impossible in which case it might be nice to reflash.  In the end, I think under the case where your laser no longer reads backups is fcuked anyhow and just a matter of time before it needs to be replaced.  Buy a new laser (or try adjusting the pot) is probably what you should worry about under those circumstances.  But ok, I give smile.gif

Cal

No need to give.  There really is no right or wrong, just discussion.  Outside obscure scenarios, you are pretty much right on.

Is there anyway to check that the burn of the enable0800 is good?

I burnt it using CloneCD, but when I try to read or write my flash (I'm on v4.0) having inserted the disk, waited 10 secs then ejected, it will neither read nor write, I'm guessing the disk is a bad burn, but is there anything I can do to confirm that?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but did the recent Xbox Live downtime / Update have anything to do with the firmware? Did they detect it and can you still play backups on Live?

Stop trying to hijaak threads with questions like these.  There are plenty of threads around for this speculation and theory. And if there is ever banning, you will see it plastered all over the place.

how  did you flash from 3.3 to 4.1?  did you use samhack bootable usb or another way? i  am curious because i am trying to do the same thing and it says "drive not detected" even though my other usb drive flashes it perfectly and the drive IS detected.

I just use a bootable floppydisk. I'm using "make41b.bat" from the xtreme4.1 folder to make my x41b.bin. Put that on the bootable floppy.

Im using the via sata card for flashing, so i unplug all other sata-drives, and disables both ide-channels in the bios.

Boot to floppy, connect pc-satacable to the dvd-drive, and "mtkflash w /m x41b.bin"

is 4.1A different than 3.3 becasue in 3.3 firmware the disc would slow down when it was in the menu and stuff like that and now i have 4.1 a and it spins fast all the time doesnt slow down for menus or anything, is this normal?
