FirmGuard is a terrible idea.

XBOX to drive: "Please tell me what firmware you are."
drive to XBOX: "No."
XBOX to XBL: "BAN!"

Stealth firmware

XBOX to drive: "Please tell me what firmware you are."
drive to XBOX: "I'm stock, fool, whachoo think?"
XBOX to XBL: "This kat's cool, let him in."

I know that Stealth firmware isn't possible on the Samsung, but still.

Xbox to stock MS28 drive: "Please tell me what firmware you are."
MS28 to Xbox: "No"
XBOX to XBL: "BAN this unmodded noob!"

Xbox to stock Hitachi 0078F drive: "Please tell me what firmware you are."
0078 to Xbox: "No"
XBOX to XBL: "BAN this unmodded noob!"

Try using logic

I think it is so:

Xbox to MS25 drive with xtreme 4.1: "Please tell me what firmware you are."
Drive to Xbox: "Samsung-TSH943A-ms28"
XBOX to XBL: "Let him in"

Try using the 360fwtoolbox from maximus and you choose by firmware your xtreme4.1 and you will see it....

Still wish he'd change to "power on with tray open to enable" instead.  A drive that's stopped reading discs cannot be flashed back to retail if it's been flashed with Xtreme 4.0/4.1/4.2!

I agree.  That sounds like something that is easier and more fail-safe.   Maybe there is some technical limitation preventing that?

For now, I am staying at 3.3 until things stabalize.

If your drive stops reading disks, you don't have to worry about the firmware not flasshing.  It *doesn't* read discs! Who cares if you cannot flash firmware.  Replace the laser.

Cal

Your drive could stop reading recordable discs but still read pressed production discs.  In that case, you might as well go back to stock firmware.  Recordable discs have always been more touch with regards to reading than production discs.

Hmmm i had zero problems with all the other firmwares, just tried going from 4.0 to 4.1 using the Enable 0800 method.....doesnt work for me.

I burned the disc using clone cd and then tried alcohol 120%....nothing, didnt unlock my drive!

Used my last two DL discs so ill have to wait untill i get some more and try it again.

Anyone else had this prob?

So I still don't understand.  If your drive stops reading burned discs but still reads originals, then what's the point of reflashing? Even if you go back to original stock fw, you are still only able to read originals.  No reason to flash again.

However, I did think that someone confirmed you could use the MS28 fw flashing method to reflash it if necessary, but I cannot recall who said it.

The readme says to have the sata cable plugged in...... :

Plug SATA cable from DVD drive to PC. Power cable drive still connected to Xbox 360

Power on PC

Boot with standard dos boot disk with included mtkflash utility to dos

Power on Xbox 360

Insert Enable0800 disc into drive and wait 10 seconds then eject disc

Run mtkflash as per normal.

What if MS does start banning users based on detecting a 4.x firmware?  (Despite all this great work, it may still be possible if something was overlooked, hence the need for 4.1 since something was overlooked in 4.0).   At least a user would have the option to go back to a stock firmware and use the box as normal and not be banned from Live (if they already didn't get flagged).

Another reason may be that future games might be shipped to not operate if a hacked firmware is detected.  Which means you are now stuck with a hacked firmware and can't play any new production discs because you can't flash back to stock.

However, I see your point.   The above two scenarios are just possibilities and far from reality at this point.  I just read all these other people having issues with the 0800 disc to enable flashing.  Granted, if the method were to boot with tray open, there would probably still be issues as a lot of this is probably user error.

Just call me devils advocate. tongue.gif

I suppose that those scenarios are not impossible in which case it might be nice to reflash.  In the end, I think under the case where your laser no longer reads backups is fcuked anyhow and just a matter of time before it needs to be replaced.  Buy a new laser (or try adjusting the pot) is probably what you should worry about under those circumstances.  But ok, I give smile.gif

I think with the whole laser worry use the default slow read firmware and make sure you use verbatims or fujis. NO MEMOREX. put it to you this way i have had my ps2 since brand new version 4 and the laser still works minty after all theese years. Cheap media and high speed equals shirt life span on laser.

I've seen references to a 4.2... is that valid?  I haven't seen any 'official' posts that would indicate that a 4.2 was released, so thought I'd ask the group....

P.S.  In reference to the previous post, another perspective, I have stuck to using only Verbatim and Memorex, burning with CloneCD and have yet to have a problem with either.  I burn the Memorex at 2.4 and the Verbatims at Max... Verbatims seem to be the agreed upon best media for 360 backups.

The only media I have tested that has consistently failed as been RiData and Playo (at any speed) (both are bad for video too, I'd only use them for pure data storage, if that...).

This might seem like a dumb question, but does the Enable 0800 need to be burned to a Dual Layer DVD???

I'll pass...

at present time with v4.0 everything works as it should.. all originals and backups boot as expected.

It's time now to wait and see what M$ will be doing to upcoming Dash updates and XBL updates to
detect the modified firmware..

i do, cause i had a floppy error, so my drive is flashed only partial (ms25)
no eject, no spinning but its locked and i can't reflash it, cause theres noway to enable 0800
seems like firmguard turns out a (bad flash) sammy killer if theres really no way to unlock it
