I might be wrong on this one, but I think if you did a bad flash like that and your drive doesn't even spin up anymore, it's bricked. It probably means the fw is completely screwed and doesn't take SATA commands anymore and the flash routines that used to be in the eeprom are also gone, so flashing through a PC is out. Only option would then be to desolder the eeprom en program it using an external programmer. But maybe someone can correct me on this one, as I'm not 100% sure the eeprom cannot be programmed without at least a working fw in the eeprom.

One other question that a number of people have asked here, but I haven't seen an answer to yet: if I flash my ms28 that has Xtreme 3.3 on it (so it has ms25 fw core), will I be able to flash it easily after I put 4.0 on it? In other words, do I need one of the ms28 tricks again to flash it later, or can the drive be flashed 'normally' after it is put in 0800 mode?

i don't believe it behaves like a ms28 drive once flashed with v4.0, therefore it will just behave like a normal drive.

i'm pretty sure this is confirmed earlier in this thread

- People

I would refrain from updating the firmware if you already have xtreme fw and your backups are working fine. As of right now no one is being banned from live and MS has no capabilities to detect hack fw. Again, as of now there is no need to update the fw to xtreme 4.0. An update is coming to live tomorrow, just wait and see what the collateral damage is over the next couple of days. For all you know MS will be no further ahead in detecting hacked fw if you have 3.0 installed or 4.0.

My xbox works perfectly and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I couldn't agree more.  Well said.

Right from all the reading i have done tonight, all you do is make a DOS bootable floppy disk, put your edited mtkflash along with the hex edited or "make x40a.bin" created firmware on the disk, boot to dos, type "mtkflash w /m x40a.bin" or "mtkflash w /m x40b.bin" wait for it to finish, and jobs a gooden.

EASY!!

No need to reflash to orig.bin, i'm doin this straight from 3.3. Gonna try tomorrow. Or day after when MS have done all there updates. Hope this helps some N00bs out.

Read page 18 if need more instructions http://www.360mods.n.../Samsungv41.pdf

This information might not be 100% but this is my take on things from reading for about 1hours or more on this site or others.

Regarding downgrading all you need to do is

Plug SATA cable from DVD drive to PC. Power cable drive still connected to Xbox 360

Power on PC

Boot with standard dos boot disk with included mtkflash utility to dos

Power on Xbox 360

Insert Enable0800 disc (Burnt on DL disc using clonecd) into drive and wait 10 seconds then eject disc

Run mtkflash as per normal.

For the people asking does this turn my drive into a MS28 meaining does it make it harder to re-flash. All you do is just insert the disc and then re-flash as normal.

successful flash from 3.3 to 4.0b, i dont' see a need to flash back to orig.  i just imported my key into 4.0b and flashed.  working great.

my guess for the different nameing is the dos 8.3 file names.  8 characters . 3 character extension.  with the a/b it is 9 chars for a name.

can i do it the good ol way ?

i.e. i got the firmware using

mtkflash r /m orig.bin

and than used kdx to extrect the key and inserted it into the 4.0a firmware and than write the firmware to drive using mtkflash w /m modified.bin

and which one do you suggest for running 99% backups 4.0a or 4.0b ?

okay i have screwed up my driven :S

here is what i did

1. made a bootable disc with mtkflash on it
2. bakup the firmware on my dvdrom as orig.bin ( it was xtreme 3.0 ) using mtkflash r /m orig.bin
3. extrected the key using kdx
4. inserted the key in xtreme40a using kdx
5. saved the firmware as modified.bin
6. updated the firmware using mtkflash w /m modified.bin

now 360 boots normally but any backup i am putting in gives me "this is xbox360 disc use it in blah blah blah"

can someone tell me where i have gone wrong ?

p.s i also tried using the make40a.bat it made the bin file but when i checked it in kdx there was no key in the firmware ... what goes

Same thing happened to me. That means that you didn't copy the key right. KDX messed it up as it did mine. I read the tutorial and manually hex'd the key and it works perfect.

i have read through this whole forum and still would like a few answsers.  first off, i do not, and dont plan on EVER using xbox live, or even plugging an ethernet cable into my 360 for that matter.  and i am not a hugh fan of the dual read speed that the new firmwares include.  i have heard alot of talk about the slow read speed not reading certain games good enough to make then "flow" like the original (oblivion for one, saints row for another).  i would be all for the quieter operation but not if it comes at the cost of performance of certain games.  i understand all i would have to do is insert an original game, but using 3.3 like i am now i dont have to do that (forced 12x read speed). can anyone, knowing my 360 will never see the light of the internet, recomend if it is worth it for me to update to this new FW, knowing the firmguard is mainly the only change i would care about. as of now i make flawless backups everytime (xbox backup creator v2.0 burning with DVD decrypter and manualy setting the layer break).  my motto has always been dont change what works.  any advice from anyone that knows what they are talking about would be helpful.  thanks in advance.

--to all the people that ask the SAME STUPID QUESTIONS on this forum.  READ, READ, READ before you ask the same question that was asked and answered on the page right before your post.  this is only the second or third post i ever decided i needed to make in my entire existence on the scene.  READ MORE THAN YOU WRITE, and you will learn ALOT more that you need to know! smile.gif sorry for the long post.

I believe it will become an ms28 but with option to flash it in both ways personaly tested today several times:

-using 0800.iso on dual
-using recovery flash(6421via or compatible / sst drive on pci sata at IDE OR no sst drive on onboard compatible sata as mentioned by others....somewhere....sorry/ TEN SECONDS TRICK / edited mtkflash)

One thing is that I flashed today ONLY ORIGINALS ms28.
But it is said that an ms28 flashed with v3.3 is ms25 compatible.
So logicaly an ms25 flashed with v4(ms28 based) will become ms28.

Correct me if I am wrong please, or I will try to update my post after I manage to test this too.

I would just stick with 3.3 as the games load the same as 4.0A and 4.0B read too slow.

Frankly, I personally think all those other mod chips are a real waste of money.
