Via6421 And Ms28 Driving Me Nuts!
« on: October 12, 2006, 05:57:00 AM »

I hope someone has solved my problem and can help.

I have installed a VIA6421 SATA card, booted to windows and installed the drivers.
Windows detects the card and states working as it should.
The problem starts when I connect the 360DVD.
I connect the 360DVD to the card and turn on, wait 10 secs+ then turn on the PC
I get the VIA screen scanning for Devices, please wait.
Then about 60 seconds later I get a message that says "Hardware Initiate Failled Please Check Device!!!
The Bios Does Not Be Installed. Press <g> To Continue!

The PC boots fine without the 360DVD.

I have tried installing this card on 3 machines, all with the same problem.

The card works ok in Windows, I connected a CD-ROM to the ATA port on the card and it worked fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Woody

Wait until you boot into the command prompt with your floppy disk or usb-stick, THEN turn your 360 on.

Thanks for replying nu1mlock,
I tried but the keyboard wont work using that method.

I also tried booting the pc to DOS prompt. Starting the 360 then plug the sata cable in to the pc.
I was the able to type 'mtkflash r orig.bin' but no drive was found.

Are you sure that card is compatible with mtkflash then?

Is there another type of 'mtkflash'?
The 6421 card was mentioned on the forum as the card to use as my nforce mboard wouldn't do it.

Realised I was using the MTKFLASH for nvidia duh!
Made a floppy with mtkflash.typ & mtkvia.exe.
Booted PC to A:\ prompt
Turned on 360 and plugged it in
Typed in mtkvia r orig.bin
I was given 4 ports. No.4 being via6421.
Selected 4 and got -
Port b400, Master/Slave: a0

Then froze

I tried the same process and connected the sata cable to the other port, still the same.

At least I'm getting somewhere thanks to your help.

you said you use mtkvia.exe and mtkflash.typ ...

That's a problem.  The mtkflash .exe and .typ files have to be named the same.  For example, just rename mtkvia.exe to mtkflash.exe and it should work then.

Go to a website called www.360mods.net and look up the guides section. Theres a guide on flashing the samsung m28 and that very sata chipset the via6421. Its a video, so it should be nice and easy.

If it works thank the guy called textbook who made the guide and site.

100% foolproof method of flashing the MS28

Sata Hardware: Any VIA 6421 Sata Card get the latest drivers http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_raid_v530c.zip

hex edited MTKFLASH Version: http://rapidshare.de/files/20676748/MTKFLASHvia.zip.html

Note: When using a hex-edited MTKFlash, you must also download a normal MTKFlash and use the MTKFlash.typ file from it. Also, your MTKFlash .exe and .typ files must be named exactly the same. Ex: if you download MTKFlashvia.exe , rename it to MTKFlash.exe
http://dhc014.rpc1.org/Files/mtkflash/mtk183c.zip

Turn off the Xbox 360 and PC.
Connect the SATA cable from the MS28 drive to the Internal port on the VIA Sata card.
Connect a PC CD or DVD drive on the VIA Sata card IDE channel (must use MTK chipset - most do - NOT Pioneer tho - all Liteon work)
Power up the Samsung 360 DVD - count to 10
Turn on the PC and boot from floppy.
Type this command: mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin and hit enter
It should display your ports. Do NOT select anything, just leave it at the "menu"
Turn off the power to the Samsung 360 DVD
Now, select port 1 , even though the Samsung 360 DVD power is now off.
It will "pause" when you select that port
I counted to 12-15, then turned on the power to the Samsung 360 DVD
It will start reading automatically.

Once youve read the FW we suggest using Xtreme v3.3 (simply put the orig.bin in the same dir as Xtreme v3.3 and run Make X33.bin. Then put the newly created X33.bin onto your floppy)

Follow the same procedure above for flashing except the command line is

mtkflash r /m x33.bin

just a note you need via183c mtkflash... works like a champ...

boot with floppy that has the above mtk flash on it and a dos bootable
at a:\ type mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin
hit #3 for sata chip card
let it backup
when finished boot to windows

also download xtreme 33 extract it and copy of your orig.bin to same directory
run make x33.bin and then get the x33.bin file and copy to floppy

boot back to dos
and then type mtkflash w /m /sata orig.bin
and watch it upload your firmware

Just get latest drivers and mtk183c_VIA and all will be fine.

Just remember these steps.

1.Leave 360 off until you get to the comand prompt.
2.Turn 360 on.
3 type mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin turn 360 off. Then press enter.
4.Count to 10.
5 Turn 360 on.
6 Watch it read.
7 Check in hex editor that file created is correct.
8 Copy 4000-4200/4400 whatever you prefer from the orig.bin
9 Open xtreme32 or xtreme33 and replace/over write the section 4000-4200/4400 in the xtreme firmware with what you took from the orig.bin.
10.save the file as hacked.bin or xtreme.bin
11.Reboot Pc and leave 360 off until cmd prompt again.
12.Turn 360 on.
13. Type mtkflash w /m /sata xtreme.bin turn 360 off. Then press enter.
14. Count to 10
15 Turn 360 on
16 Watch it flash 4 sections.
When complete Disconnect pc test 360.

If it fails reading or writing just try again its all a matter of timing.
