I'll be as direct as i can so i can hopefully get the best help.

I have the VIA VT6421L sata card and i installed it onto my computer. I have not changed anything in the bios in relation to that, nor have i done anything with the program that came with it (via raid tool = the name of that program).

I also have an ms28 fw drive (toshiba samsung drive obviously) and it is currently connected to the sata card (by the external port)

I have my harddrive, dvdrom and floppy disk drive connected in the computer.

I am using the NTFSDOS CD for this, and the MTKflash that i have is the one from "http://rapid share.de/files/2 2716234/mtk183 c_VIA.rar.html" (i think it causes an error if you have rapidshare links as one word on this forum, but this is the link from the hitachisamsungtutorialv41merged.pdf and so i assume this is fine to use.

I am following the information on page 25 of the tutorial that is under the "MS28 Instructions" title and i am using X360sam (i have the 0.4 version and i renamed the xtreme 3.3 firmware to the 3.2 filename as instructed.

I can boot NTFSDOS and i can get past the screens where it says to press enter and say "yes" (to using the program in a legal way or whatever it says). Since my C drive is..well...a C drive, then i am able to enter "c:/" to change the prompt to display it as "c:/" instead of a:/". This is also the time i turn on the xbox360 and let it boot to the dashboard.

Here is where i have the troubles. I quite simply am not sure what to do next (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Page 26 of that tutorial says this:

Type the following command a few seconds after turning on your Xbox 360:
SAMREAD XXXXXXX YYYYY , using your Xbox 360 serial number

I did that, and i got this (paraphrased, but should make sense to all the experienced people here) message:

MKDIR failed for 'backups'
port 170 master/slave a0

Have i done something wrong? Am i supposed to enter "mktflash r /m /sata orig.bin" or something?

I have noticed on page 21 of that tutorial, it says i should enter "Mtkflash r /m orig.bin" and a few more details on page 22 of the tutorial, but i am unsure if i have to follow these steps or if they are simply for ms25 firmwares.

I am willing to do it the manual way if X360SAM is the problem here, but i don't think i can do it via a floppy disk as im having problems with that drive.

I was having the same problem with sam..never got it to work. then I did it the manual way according to that 0.41 guide.

- formated usb flash drive with hp formating tool(link should be on the guide)
- dump the original bin
- get the key from original using maximus firmware updater
- open xtreme33.bin and paste the key from original firmware
- flash the drive manual way with the modified firmware with my drive key
- WORKED GREAT !

now I dont know if maximus tool is supposed to work for 28. I have a samsung 25A.

(let me know if you need any other info..I am pretty shitty at explaining all this tech shit but you get the picture)

I've never heard of the maximus tool, so i wouldnt feel comfortable using it.

But either way, i dont even know how to dump the firmware.

I dont know if i just type the samread command or the "mktflash r /m /sata orig.bin" or something else.

It seems like i should only do the samread one, but i tend to see the other one mentioned too. I dont want to brick my xbox360 and i have read quite a bit, im just confused about exactly what i should enter after i turn the xbox360 on at the command prompt.

did you use the newest via drivers  v5.something I think 5.2

you need to get to the screen where you choose the via 6421 to read from

Flashed it the 520c Via drivers (I think). Then used the edited MTKFlash for the Via chip set with the X360SAMv0.4. I had to edit the Samremod.edit and Samread.batch files and change the name from extreme v32 to v33. ( All i did was delete the 2 and change it to a three in both those files.) I did this because I wanted the newest firmware. Or you could just put in the 32 version and eliminate the changes. I tried this on my emachine (for hours and hours) but and couldn't get it to work. Then tried it on a dell pc and it worked just fine

You said you're following the MS28 Instructions, but you never said that you powered off your drive then back on to do the bad flash method.  It states this right in the instructions.  You also need an mtk-based PC cd/dvd drive and you DO need to use the command mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin.  Without the /sata switch, it won't detect the drive.  The instructions are right, just make sure you're following them word for word.  Also, if you can, try to use USB or Floppy, the CD doesn't work too well.

The guide hasn't said to turn off the xbox360 yet, as i didnt know the right command.

Hopefully, it means i do this:

Use a usb (since my floppy isnt too reliable and gives some i/o error) with the mtk files
Enter the command you stated
Follow the rest of the instructions as stated (im guessing the samread command is next, but ill make sure of that when i read the instructions again later).

But about the "mtk-based drive", i think this may cause a problem also. I have an LG GSA-4120b and i noticed on some other dvd forum, someone said "LG DVD burner do not use MediaTek chipsets". I recently bought (but have yet to install), the SH-D162C dvd drive and it appears that has this chipset.

Would that mean i should disconnect my LG DVD drive, connect up my new SH-D162C drive and then follow the instructions (and watch both video's also, as they should help me)?

Im sorry if i dont sound too clear, i just sometimes can't explain myself well. i hope i have as im hoping to do this firmware hack within the next 24 hours (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well, I had the ms25 firmware, but I was getting the EXACT same error message, port and all. I was also using the same card. The thing that fixed it for me was making shure I has the sata cable plugged into channel one (the one furthest from the metal bracket). I suggest you try that as well, it may help. Thanks and good luck!

quck question to anybody, if i'm doing it this way can i use a floppy? or is there not enough space on it? Is there a reason behind using the usb drive?

Thanks.

Now im even more confused.

I watched that ms28 video, but i saw no "mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin" when he was typing the commands. Yet it says on the link that i should use that. Confusing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Is there a simple way to verify that my sata card is working as it should for this procedure? I did install it and i did install those updated drivers, but i have no idea if it now is working properly or not.

Im also going to install my new samsung drive (and disconnect my current LG burner i guess).

And again, is my sata cable in the right plug in the computer?

It's currently in the external one, should i plug it in another hole instead?

and while im here, why does this link look different to my card?

http://tekgems.com/Products/et-18412-ccd-sy-via-150r.htm

My card is green and has an external port. Is that right? Or do i perhaps not have the  Vt6421l card?

I applaud the people who get stuck on this and don't get angry or depressed. It's so annoying that everything i want to try seems to fail (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Anyway, here is my problem now.

I followed the tutorial on the video link, and i have the samsung drive i mentioned installed and i edited the two files it said to edit with the /sata command and i moved the files to the C drive (so they arent in an "xtreme boot" folder).

Yet, when i enter the samread XXXXXXX XXXXX command, it still comes up with this error:

MKDIR failed for 'backups'
port 170 master/slave a0

I have no idea why this error is coming up and it's really depressing the hell out of me. Does anyone have any idea how exactly to fix this problem?

Im sorry this is a third post in a row, i just have no idea how to delete/edit previous posts.

Im using a usb drive now and i know that works as it let me look at the directory and i saw all the requried files on there.

My problem is, after i type the samread and serial number command, i get a "directory already exists" error and then an mtkflash line that mentions joe (i guess the guy that made it) and the version number, then i get a "port 170, master/slave b0" line.

Before it was the a0 line, so i dunno. Could my sata be the problem? and if so, what would i have to do (in the bios or for drivers or for whatever) that i havent already stated i have done? I already installed the lastest drivers that were mentioned and installed them (i clicked the setup file in windows, as im guessing thats what i had to do). And like i mentioned, my sata is plugged in the back external plug, should i not do this?

Sorry for all the questions, i just assume this is a very easy question to answer for the experienced people, while a difficult question for noobs like me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

just a note you need via183c mtkflash... works like a champ...

boot with floppy that has the above mtk flash on it and a dos bootable
at a:\ type mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin
hit #3 for sata chip card
let it backup
when finished boot to windows

also download xtreme 33 extract it and copy of your orig.bin to same directory
run  make x33.bin and then get the x33.bin file and copy to floppy

boot back to dos
and then type mtkflash w /m /sata orig.bin
and watch it upload your firmware

Maybe that is my problem, x360sam may be giving me a edited mtkflash that isnt working. Also, in the huge tutorial, there are two links to download the edited mtkflash for this card, one says mtk183c and the other says mtkflashvia. Im correct in assuming these are the same thing, right?

Hopefully, then even though ill do things the long way, it should work. I will be using USB for it though, that's not a problem for doing this, right?
