dabs.com do them too.  Black (£12.03) or Beige (£12.33), the choice is yours.

Hi, flashed my sh-d162c drive with v0.80, backed up pgr3 with xbox backup creator v2.0, then tried to backup dead rising but it stops at random percentages (no dvd drive activity, it just stops, & windows task manager doesn't help or end the program sucessfully either so it needs to be turned off & then on again to try again).
Tried it several times, then tried to backup pgr3 again, & that does the same thing (even though it worked the first time). Also tried Xbox Backup Creator v2.1 & that does the same thing. It just stops at anywhere from 3.00% or more (mainly 11.76%, 20% 30% etc). I'm using the drive on a laptop with usb2.0 & a usb2.0 to ide converter/adapter cable, the laptop is 2.9ghz, 192mb ram, running windows xp sp2, with net framework 2 installed, aol scheduler runs in the background although ending the task in wtm makes no difference. It has about 14gb of free space & is the original hdd, not an external one. I'm not running any other programs at the time & usually just open up xbbcv2.1 without opening any other programs at all. I'm using a PSU from an old PC with a molex connector to power the dvd drive. I have tried unlocking the drive first in xbbcv2.1 but that makes no difference. The discs have no scratches or dust or dirt on them. Is it possible to reflash the dvd drive with kreon & could that be the problem (it recognises the drive properly in xbbcv2.0 & v2.1 as kreon v0.80)? Also does it flash the latest version to the dvd drive even if you have the v0.80.bin in the folder on the pc when you click the flasher? If not, I'm guessing that the v0.81 file is at the usual place correct? The nme 360 site doesn't have the v0.81 file, only the v0.80 so that's why I'm asking. What could be causing it to stop at random percentages? Any ideas? Thanks.

Well I re-flashed the firmware anyway, made no difference. So then I uninstalled cloneCD & Net Framework2, restarted the PC, & it works! I'm pretty sure it was cloneCD that was the problem, as I installed Net Framework2 after the second backup attempt failed in order to try different programs. It's settings must interfere with the errors on the disc, making xbbcv2.1 crash &/or the dvd drive stop spinning.

I too initially had some problems backing up my Dead Rising disc using kreons v0.80 firmware. It wouldn't get anywhere when I tried Schtrom V2.1 (which worked for every other game), but it backed up perfectly when I used Xbox Backup Creator v2.0 complete backup option.

I think I have a problem flashing my my SH-D162C (Black) drive with Kreon's v0.81 that hopefully some you can help with.  The drive is connected to my laptop via a USB 2.0 enclosure and the flash process seems to have gone without any problems.  I only thought it weird when the flashing progress bar slowly got to about 1/2 way and then quickly jumped to 100% complete.  Not sure if that is normal.  I flashed twice and got the same result.

Now my problem is that everytime I do a complete backup of my game I would get a different Security Sector sequence.  I get the same results with either Schrom 3.0 or Xbox Backup Creator 2.1.0.175.  I would extract the SS from the image using XBC.  I have no way to test if my backups work since I haven't flashed my Hitachi (haven't got my X360USB yet).  I still think I should get consistent security sectors from the same game, right?  Thanks for any help!

I remember reading somewhere on this thread of this problem and is due to the jitter that kreon built in to give random ss which makes it impossible for M$ to detect it or something like that... even the ss is different, it should still work...

Does anyone know if the same image created for say an NME 360 chip will also work for an XBOX 360 with flashed drive?  I'll be getting my 360 this weekend, but not decided on which mod method to use.

Does anyone know what the chances of getting a TS drive is on a new 360 or would it be more likely a Philips or Hitachi?

Thanks

Steven

Thanks for the info!  It makes sense.  I wait to get the X360 USB to test.

Regarding your question about the TS drive, I read in another post that if the Xbox 360 is manufactured after Late July/Early Aug 2006 then there is very high chance it would be the new Hitachi 78FK drive that cannot be modded.  Hope that helps.

Just got my SH-D162C drive in today.  I am running Vista RC2, and was able to successfully flash the drive with the .81 firmware.  I can extract the game.iso, pfi.bin, dmi.bin and video.iso successfully, but the drive fails to extract the SS.bin file.  Schtrom360Xtract V3.0 locks up after trying until the game disc is removed/reinserted.

When attempting to extract the SS.bin file from Call of Duty 2 for example, Schtrom360 gives the error message: "Can't extract SS.bin!"

With the game Blazing Angels, the results are identical.

If anyone has any advice (except perhaps reverting to XP) I'd be happy to entertain suggestions.

Unfortunately the same result.  Same thing when I try to do it "old school" and use DVDInfo Pro.  No go on SS extraction.  I'm wondering if it's a Vista thing.  I have another PC with XP on it that I can put the drive in and try tonight to see if that's it.  I'll report back to the forum my results.

I put my SH-D162C drive flashed with Kreon's .81 firmware into my XP machine, and it successfully extracted the SS.bin file w/out even a hiccup.  There must be something about how Vista passes that particular command to the DVD drive over the IDE channel that's different than XP, rather than something that needs to be updated in the firmware itself.  Guess my new drive is going to be in the XP machine for the time being.

If any program writers would like to send me test versions of their software to check out on XP w/this drive, please PM me and I'll be happy to do what I can to help.

After a little more detective work, I got my SH-D162C drive working on Windows Vista RC2.  Originally I had the drive plugged into the second IDE channel as the master drive.  I changed it so that it's now the master drive on the primary IDE channel.  I am booting off my SATA hard drive, on SATA channels 0 & 1 (RAID 0 configuration).  Now the drive will extract the SS.BIN file, but when I did a FC (File Compare in a DOS window) between the SS.BIN I dumped using the drive from the console (Toshiba/Samsung, not Hitachi) and the one dumped using the SH-D162C drive for COD2, there are 4 differences between the files (shown below)  Is the SS.BIN I dumped using the SH-D162C drive a valid SS.BIN file?  I'd hate to waste another dual-layer disc finding out...

00000228: 01 00
00000231: 58 5A
0000023A: B5 B4
00000243: 0C 0E

The first column after the colon represents the value in the SS.BIN file dumped using the 360's drive, and the second column is the value of the SS.BIN file dumped using the SH-D162C drive.

Upon doing an FC on the PFI.BIN and the DMI.BIN dumped from both drives, the files were identical.

Thanks all!
