That black glue stuff does look like the stuff they use at Nokia.

This guy scrubbed the black epoxy glue stuff off a camera lense glued to a chip with an earbud and surgical spirits.

Take a look.

If anyone thinks the only way M$ can combat hacked firmware is a bit of glue, then they must be bonkers ! They havent even showed their hand yet.

That was a glue to hold the lens assembly on. This glue is to prevent hacking

It is most likely an isophthalic polyester resin, they are chemically resistant and most importantly electrically non conductive. These resins are thermosetting that is to say once they have heated and cooled down they are largely unaffected by heat, say up to 300 -350 °C, much hotter than this and you will simply char the resin (and probably knacker the board in the process) You can only really remove it physically i.e. by chipping/cutting it off. If it is well adhered I don’t fancy your chances of removing it without damage to the electrical components it is designed to protect.

I am glad M$ finally addressed this hack. They need to control piracy and stop all these pirates from downloading games from torrents and usenet.

For those of you wanting to try to remove the resin epoxy the term used for doing this
is call "depotting" google it. There are some chemicals that can work to remove this depending
on what type they used. i.e. things like methylene chloride and perchloroethane, and formic acid.

But from what I have read so far, heat is a good start and see if it becomes soft and goooy.
Just food for thought.

I didn't want to buy an Xbox 360 until late in Jan. Now this is making me want to buy a 360 right now so I don't encounter the impossibility of hacking. Can anyone tell me how soon we will see the new "unhackable" (yea right) drives in the US? I wanted to wait because I can't afford it and the rumors about a new cooler running processor plus the possibility of an updated xbox 360 or price cuts or packages was tempting. Any advice on this would be helpful. I guess I could always count on the fact that no matter what is done the 360 will always be hackable.

If you want my $.02, M$ is playing this very very smart.  As bertiedugger stated (I would have quoted but for some reason when I hit the button the page keeps timing out, anyways...), people whose 360s have hacked firmware but keep their boxes isolated, that is not connected to the net whatsoever, will not be subject to a software update from big Bill.  In turn, a direct hardware solution was the obvious route to take, i.e. the "new black glue," new programming so that existing software to implement hacked firmware could not be utilized, and so forth.  As far as I am concerned, the next logical step taken by M$ would be to implement a software update (to prevent firmware hacks on older DVD drives) that is automatically initiated via playing a popular game that almost all 360 enthusiests would endulge in, say Gears of War or Halo 3 perhaps.

One thing is for sure though, the war between Redmond and the underground has most certainly begun!

M$ wont have to wait for someone to play a popular game on xbl to initiate an update. They can just force the update upon anyone who connects to live and offer the disconnect warning if you dont update.

But if you don't connect to XBL at all, i.e. don't even plug in your console to the internet, then they will have no way to force the update onto you and will be forced to take the route of implementing an update via popularly played games.

But some people will not connect to Live at all and so the only way M$ could force an update would be via game software as with GTA etc on the PSP.

Also with regards to people banging on about being glad M$ has come up with a way to stop firmware hacks, what about people who would rather replace their broken dvd themselves rather than coughing up £100 + for MS to replace is. Without access to the firmware people wont be able to get their 360 key.

At some stage in the future most are likely to have to replace their drive due to wear and tear. I am on my third dvd drive on my original xbox. Also with 3 kids all playing different games on it there are bound to be scratches to discs. I have had to back up games countless times due to scratched discs and there is no way I would cough up more dough to buy a game I had already purchased. For xbox that get multiple user heavy duty use backups are essential.

I have been waiting on doing the FW hack because I like to play on Xbox Live....a LOT!

but now...that they are coming out with a new DVD drive and such...it seems they may have no way to stop the old 360's from playing backup games online and everything.

Now might be the time to try out FW modding myself.

Hmmmmm...
