There has been many changes done to the new Hitachi GDR-3120L - Version: 0078fk drive.

#1: No "memdump" command works, totally new program needed

#2: Chip type has been changed to a 39VF020, so new "flashsec" program needed

#3: Black hard glue has been added covering all the chip pins and the controller pins.

#4: External "debug" triggering into ModeB has been removed.

What does all mean:

#1: The Team-X kit will no longer work on this drive.

#2: Dumping the firmware by software is currently not possible

#3: Wiring in a patching-on-the-fly "mod" would be very hard due to the "new black glue"

#4: Removing the flash chip to externally be read will destory the drive due to the "new black glue"

What options are left to us:

#1: Get more people working on this new drive, currently only in UK and Aussie.

#2: Destory at one drive to be able to dump the firmware, using a external programmer.

#3: Afterwards sitting down and re-writing all the programs: "memdump, firmcrypt, flashsec".

#4: If you can't wait, buy an older produced x360 console (Before Late July/Early Aug. dates).

That's all for now....

We are working on it....

Hopefully some poor soul will give us one personally...

So we can destory it and play with it for everyone else....

It seems "garyopa" has a new toy now biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

SOON ,I believe, he will looking forward for a newer toy as the 78 will be history too!!

Thank you Gary. Thank you "ALL"...!!!! love.gif

PS: Thank you MS for this cool console too!!! tongue.gif

I have to agree. If it was as simple as MS including a fw flash for hacked drives in an auto update then it would have been done, and before the time and money was put into this new drive. I would think they would have tried it long ago to be honest.

Agreed.. remember, even if they can.. preventing people from doing it is enough for them..

Everyone that has this drive was made in August mine is the 25th so you might be lucky smile.gif

are you in Aus or UK?

UK. Im really hoping I dont have one but who can tell until they open and im wary of doing that and voiding my warranty for potentially no purpose at this time if I do have a 78.

Im sure M$ has done this to future drives to stop people playing backups full stop who would maybe keep their 360's well away from a network connection.

If m$'s answer is to epoxy the complete chip to keep people from hacking, this is a weak response on their behalf to the amount of effort they are going to go through to prevent people from hacking and furthermore their ablilites to stop existing people that have already flashed their existing drives.  Really a shody way of craftmanship.  Didnt work for the samsung, and wont work for the 0078fk.

I pity the poor souls that are slaving to put the new drives together and has to sit on a workbench all day with a sole purpose in life to apply expoy.

Nice comeback M$, LMAO

Kinda sucks for you people there.. Wow and they are really going thru some junk to make sure you can't get ot the drive and Flash it.

I still think they can't combat the FW hack. If this is there method of doing it, making the FW harder to replace, then the white flag is up in the land of M$!

Gary - Good luck! I bet you are enjoying this challange ;-)

Is this microsoft telling us they don't know how to combat the old drives?  Why haven't they done any banning or upgrading to old drives via live?

First lets wait until the fall update. If there is no anti-firmware prevention I doubt ms will be able to stop / detect it but we will all see

If there is only a limited product of the the new drive you can still score and older unit with samsung or older hitach

People that are getting repair are still ending up with the same dvd drive. If ms put the new drive in every repair then we know that cant stop it.

It's a cheap and easy update from M$ to thwart hackers.  They probably released the drives in the UK and Australia due to the SH-D162C drives being widely available.  We'll probably see these in the US near the Holidays.

Could Microsoft have stuffed themselves? If they've designed the dashboard in such a way that it physically cannot access hardware level resources (such as the DVD firmware for example) as a way of preventing dashboard hacks/exploits then they could be in a position where they can't do anything about the hack, other than make it more difficult for people to hack the physical drive (as they have done with the 0078fk).

Pure speculation but it would explain why they've let the hack run on for as long as they have.

Actually MS can flash on the fly thru Xbox Live, most of the chips on the 360 are flashable, but we have to wait unit the next update to really make sure what MS has in store for the firmware hack, software wise of course.

Guys there were 6 revisions of the Xbox 1 motherboard, this means nothing on what MS can do or not do to detect the current hacks.

In the past that have done both.. hardware changes AND softwre/console bans...

Why would this time be any different?

P.S.  Each Xbox 1 revision made it more difficult but not impossible...  I am sure the next version wont detected in windows at all.. Slax seeing it seems like a big loophole that will be closed next time.
