It wouldn't be too much of a sacrifice if Gary were to give you your drive key so you could replace the drive with one found on eBay.

Yeah i know it wont be too much off a hassle of replacing the drive but i am not really concerned with that, i just want a unit so i can try get the epoxy of and dump the tsop.
Does anyone know if the 'black stuff' is just glue or is it like the stuff nokia use in their handsets to protect the UEM? Coz if its just glue, then surley it could be removed with my rework station (i doubt this though)

Cheers

Whats the earliest date anyone has for one of these drives ? My box was manufactured on 03/07/06 so Im unsure if I have one of these or not. What worries me most is going to get my box done, voiding my warranty and then finding I have a 78. Knowing my luck my box would then pack in before anyone sussed out how to flash this drive thus costing me a bomb to fix.

One question I have, can the keys still be extracted from the drive without removing the chip thus allowing potential poor souls to at least buy a replacement drive and be able to flash their key and xtreme firmware and just keep their 78 to one side for a rainy day ?

just a thought guys so dont flame me ,with the black glue cant u just solder from the otherside of the pcb or is it blank ive never seen it so cant comment .

It's not that simple.  Traces/pins on one side of a board won't necessarily be accessible from the other side.  I've never done a 360 firmware hack though, just xbox1..

Doesn't that glue come off if you warm it up near 100°C? With most glues you don't even have to reach 100°C

Like is say, if anyone in the UK can tell me where i can buy of these units, then please contact me and i will start messing around with it. Ill try remove the 'black stuff' and dump the TSOP for garyopa to inspect the dump.

maby people will start buying games now and stop torrenting games (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) dont start that (i want to make a back up of my games, crap!)

on the other hand this is a violation of the DMCA (digital malinuem copyright act) and i dought this will be in the US sinse it is a US law so breath easyley US hacked firmware kids

we should also start to see more imported US consoles to those regions:P

most likley you would damage the PCB in the process or start to melt the solder (forgot the melting point for solder)

I think this pretty much proves that MS cannot defend against the FW hacks if this is their strategy. I wonder how many 'top-level' meetings were held on how to combat this - moreso how many people were given the boot because of the FW flaw on what's supposed to be a locked down console.

I would say those who have hacked drives should be pretty safe for a long time.....

Not likely I have removed glue many times from PCB with this procedure. The melting point depends on the used solder and it really doesn't matter if the solder starts to melt as you can always resolder.

if the Aim is to safelt remove the chip (FW), my methord might work....but it will destroy your drive but you will be able to get the chip out succesfuly...

1. get a dremel and cut around the SST ship 1 cm around it ...
2. once you have the chip and the PCB stuct to in.... put the chip in a 120 DegreesC oven for about 10 mins....
3. after that just get glue off and you have a preficlty good FW chip which have the FW on it....

If you could do that then you could get to the pins and wouldnt need to destroy the board.
