To the guy above

7 posts up on the same freakin' page

QUOTE(bricklayer @ Nov 28 2006, 10:25 PM) *

just to advise the unwary 78fk owners!
there are fake firmwares about for this drive.
i posted info on the other site and got this verified by  garyopa.
it seems the fakes will brick your 78,so dont use it.
wait for genuine garyopa firmwares which no doubt will be verified in the usual places.

bricklayer,

But this is different though, the fake firmwares are ones that have to be used through a programmer that will brick your drive.  At this point there is no way to write to the chip unless it is removed so this firmware report is something entirely different hence the reason for the confusion because this release cant brick your drive because there is no way yet to write to the chip through software.

You have an intelligent note, however it is totally beside the point

"just to advise the unwary 78fk owners!

(nevermind this line)

Can anyone confirm a software method has been released?
from: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=567312
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
            XTRM-HITACHI_v3.1 Stealth v78
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
*** MOST OF THE WORK IS FROM garyOPA, even most of this Readme File ***
                 *** TESTED ON V78 ***
FEATURES (my contribution on this release):

* Removed old media detection and replaced with better media detection
(media detection ver 2) from Geremia.
* Incorporates Maximus Firmware Stealth (Full Firmware Stealth)

***********************************************************************

FLASH78.BAT: Flashes your drive with 3.1 Fw Stealth (Media Detect 2,
              F900 core and Firwmare Stealth
RESTORE.BAT:  Return your drive to original State, even if you have
              firmware stealth in your drive
*RECOMENDATION: If you have flashed your drive in the past use RESTORE
first. If it is a brand new drive use directly the Flash command you
like. If you dont plan to use your drive to dump games use the
flash15s.bat
* ALL NEW XTREME V3.1 FIRMWARE FOR v78 BUILDS OF THE HITACHI DRIVES!

   - includes "Security Sector Extraction" v78 Hitachi Drives

   - Included media detection 2 from Geremia and Maximus Firmware
Stealth, this release just supports SS Extraction within Windows
without the need to re-flash your drive back and forth between
     PLAY & RIP!
Flashing your drive
-------------------
FLASH22S.BAT automatically makes a complete backup of your firmware system

* To FLASH a drive, it must be in "Mode B" and have "Drive Letter"
* Then just run FLASH78 from "Command Prompt" while inside windows
* Prompt must be at the same directory with the rest of the files!

* FLASH78 needs two variables, the assigned "Drive Letter", and any 4
numbers for the BACKUP directory, use a new unique number like 1572

  - This is used to make your BACKUP directory!

  - For Example: FLASH78.BAT H 1572

  - Will cause the FLASH after running to have, a BACKUP directory
"X78-1572" and the program will store FIVE firmware files:

    ---- key.bin   ---- DRIVE KEY /// DRIVE KEY
    ---- was.bin   ---- Your drive before FLASH
    ---- gdrXX.bin ---- The untouch original fw
    ---- XX_22.bin ---- The patched Xtreme22 fw
    ---- now.bin   ---- Your drive after FLASH!

  - Where the XX in the above names will be the version of your Hitachi

* Program will not start unless a BACKUP is correctly made and stored!

* Flash will auto-detect your firmware build of your Hitachi drive.

* You can flash any drive, even "v1.1" or "f900" or your own hacks.

* System will check flashed firmware, and redo until 100% completed.

* Once you get the PASS / DONE line, you can shut-down the system.
FLASH15S.BAT is the same as above but, without F900 core, use this
if you dont want to extract SS with your drive.
Restoring your drive
--------------------
RESTORE.BAT automatically restores your drive back to original state

* To RESTORE a drive, it must be in "Mode B" and have "Drive Letter"
* Then just run RESTORE from "Command Prompt" while running windows.

* The new RESTORE does not need any backup, it will 100% restore your
drive back to "ORIGINAL" state as long as it is visible in Windows!

* Program will not start unless it detects the version of your Hitachi!

* You can restore any drive, even "v1.1" or "f900" or your own hacks.

* System will check flashed firmware, and redo until 100% completed.

* Once you get the PASS / DONE line, you can shut-down the system.

Sorry but your incorrect.

there are no releases out that will flash your 078 drive via software (the usual way)

there are no firmwares released that will brick your drive by using it with an external programmer.
cuz if you `brick` it with an external progger, you can just remove the chip and prog it again.

there are no fake releases out for the 078fk drive that will brick it.  i could be wrong, but i mean c`mon people use your brains, if using a dodgy fake 078 flash pack will brick, its got to some how write to the drive.

if it could do this, we would have a working software solution.

just wait for gary or for team-xecuter 9to release there chips)

ive just managed to do one of these 078 drives via the external method.

wasnt easy and 4 xbox 360s died along the way, but now that ive sussed out where i was going wrong (combination of dodgy progger and dry joints) i`m fairly confident i can do these no problems now.

but belive me it aint easy, and i`m certainly no novice to solder / re-work.

have you actually got any backups working at all? if not them maybe your drive isnt done.

whats happening when the backups dont work?  on screen messages etc etc.

bit more detail.

also you obviously have a hitachi drive, what burner are you using?  hitachis work best with pioneer drive (rec 111d)

Make sure you update the firmware of the Pioneer
Only use Verbatim or Traxdata 8X
Make sure the games you are burning are PAL and not NTSC (read nfo)
Are the images patched with SS files? If not, make sure they are (read nfo)
Burn in cloneCD at 2.4
