If the old Samsung or Hitachi are safe on live ie, MS cant see the firmware then they will soon cost a fortune to get hold of.

Good point, would be sweet if my sammy drive alone was worth $600+ on ebay biggrin.gif

Maybe $1k for my 360.

But I wouldn't be selling it  ph34r.gif

Wow I should have woken up earlier. I don't have time now to read all the posts!

Anyway, I guess this officially means MS is still unable to have a solution for those who have hacked firmware? It seems like the logical conclusion...

I was certain they would have some way to fix all the flashed FW's out there, but I guess not.

Actually no, that's not what it means.

BUT, it might mean that it might be difficult enough to detect the hack on the Xbox 360. If it was easy to do then why bother with the black glue? If it was easy to do, they could just slip a few lines of code into each game and it would not run on ANY modded drive.

I'm just really curious whether they'll be able to detect the modded Samsung but not the Hitachi....might be time to buy a spare Hitachi drive ;-)

Cheers

well, it has nothing to do with live and not being able to ban people. their main focus is to make money, that's what a business wants to do. microsoft (and every other company in the world) knows, they will lose money by people stealing product but how much is acceptable is always the issue at hand. every business is ready to lose x% but if they have the opportunity to minimize how much they lose then they'll do it. the black glue will stop x amount more people than no black glue and it costs them x amount more to put on it. basically black glue is cheaper than losing money to game sales because there will also be the x amount of people who are OK with not having live. so, bans for live could still be coming while them making it more difficult for new people to jump on the bandwagon.

plus pirates still have to pay to get on life ... so they are still making a little money with no blocking of FW hack. they also may not ban a lot of people because they want to win this console race!

finally i want to add that epoxy is as disgusting as DRM ;-)

If MS was really planning on blocking existing FW hacks...i really think they would have done something by now. I'm sure if they were going to do it, it wouldn't be so difficult for them to release a live update already. Or they could have started putting updates on newer games like Madden 07, Dead Rising, etc...like Sega used to do on Dreamcast (even though it didnt really work well then). I think they are downplaying it because its more of an underground thing..and they are still making $ off XBL with the modded 360's. I remember reading an article with a response from an MS rep saying they aren't making a really big deal about the hack...especially since it's not tremendously wide spread...it's pretty much just being used by enthusiast "hackers" for the most part. Plus they emphasized the whole piracy = non genuine MS products, not supported by MS, etc.
