Two Wires Trick
« on: September 13, 2006, 07:09:00 AM »

Please excuse me for my ignorance, but I have a few questions regarding two wires trick.

I understand I need two wires for the trick, now what I wonder is do I have to "bridge"/connect them before the turning 360 on? I'm almost sure that I have to as just having them inside wouldn't have much effect but than again I might be dead wrong.

Also I've read something about "timing". Like in: "...time turning 360 on and pulling wires just after the memory test is finished on PC..." or something like that. Now I've read tutorials but they do not mention it anywhere. (Hitachi tutorial at least)

And last but not least, do I "have" to assemble 360 again or can it function without the top lock part, sides and such? (ofc I would try to connect HD to it again).

Thank you for your time!

What 2 wire trick are you talking about.

There is a 2 wire trick to get the Hitachi into mode B

and...

There is a 2 wire trick for a Samsung with ms28 FW also (pop resistor off and solder 2 wires to the contacts).

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear.
It is to get Hitachi drive into B mode. Thing is I have the same problem as some people here. Nforce 4 chipset and Hitachi that is visible in BIOS but not reckognised by windows (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
I tried with uninstalling Nvidia IDE drivers but no go. Bios "freezes" after Slax reboot and after I open the tray I get into windows but drive is still not visible. So I guess I have to do two wires trick

Just what the tutorial says :

Hold the 2 wires together, then push the power button and release the wires ( QUICK ) when the green light turns on .
YOUR IN MODE B

This way to get in Mode B is tricky, you have 2 be quick

It was also my way to get it working

I have one card that works for flashing Samsungs but won't work to read them in windows, I had to get a CompUSA 3512 SATA to PCI card for that, that card is also the only one I can use with Hitachi drives. You can pick one up at CompUSA for $35 I think (could get a VIA 6421 off newegg for half of that though). But I'm not sure, you might be able to get the drive recognized with your chipset though.

So you connect the 2 wires? On one side wires are in the white 360 cable and the other ends are connected together right?

If you dont want to take a risk - do it somewhere else with someone who has done it before.

But if you like to take a risk - READ THE TUTORIAL ! - its your call
I think it was wire 0 and wire 9 - connect the wires together and release it after you pushed the power button and the green light lit up.

There are no 'wire tricks' necessary for anything. Don't waste your 360 with bullshit like that.

Use the Slax modeB bootdisc for Hitachi and VIA chipset for MS28

Yeah, ok...  Because Slax works with all chipsets right? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Slax is great if your chipset is compatible.  AFAIK, the only chipsets that work with it are VIA 8237 onboard and SIL-based chipsets.  Without that, you might as well skip trying the disc entirely - it won't work no matter how many times you try.

The wire trick isn't bullshit.  You do realize it's the same thing the kits use?  Do the wire trick, use a resistor and don't hold it together too long and you'll be fine.  If you brick your drive with the 2 wire trick, I don't feel sorry for you, you must have something ridiculously wrong upstairs.

Totally agree with Textbook. My first Hitachi I spent 3-4 hours trying Slax and hotswapping. I really didn't want to resort to the 2 wire trick, but I was not going to waste anymore time trying anything else, and it was Friday that day, to order a X kit would have been stupid as it would not have even shipped till Monday and I wouldn't have gotten it anywhere near as soon as I needed it. After 3-4 hours of messing with it I did the 2 wire trick and was finished in 10 minutes. I kick myself for not just trying the 2 wire trick immediatly after Slax not working.

I did the two wire trick and killed my drive.

Buy a connectivity kit, its much easier.

Just make sure that the wires you're shorting are coming from tho 0 and 9 pins and that as soon as you power on your 360 you release the wires and you will be fine.

Edit: People have been known to fry their drives using the xecuter kit aswell. Although it was mostly likely their fault, it is no safer than the two wire method if used improperly.
