Guide: Using A Laptop Dvd Drive With Wxripper
« on: August 10, 2006, 03:21:00 PM »

For those who are having problems trying to rip an image of an xbox 360 disc I have a method that has worked for me without any problems that hasn't been talked about yet.  This method requires you to have a laptop and a dvd-rom drive on that laptop.

Please note that this will work with only some of the laptop drives, as all laptop drives are not made equally, but are similar.  So if you are adventerous and want to try this, it should be similar if u don't have the exact drive as I do.

Extracting ISO with WxRipper via Laptop DVD Drive:

Step 1: Safely Removing Hardware

Look in your systray (where your time is) and double click on the icon that is to: Safely Remove Hardware.
Select your dvd-rom drive, and click Stop.
This will make it so your computer doesn't go haywire when u try to disconnect it without doing this step.

Step 2: Unlocking the Drive from the laptop

Look at the bottom of your laptop, and try to find a latch that will unlock your drive from your laptop so you can pull it out.

Step 3: Removing the cover

There were three small screws that I had to unscrew to get to the insides of the drive.  After unscrewing these screws, it was easy take off.

Step 4: Manually ejecting the tray

Use a pin or paper clip to manually eject the tray.

Step 5: Understanding the drive

Once the drive has been ejected, look at the insides of the drive, and try to understand how the mechanism works.  That is, there has to be some way that when the tray slides in, it triggers something to tell the drive that the tray has been closed and can now read the disc.  For me, when the tray slides in, it hit a latch (which is circled in red) to tell the drive that the tray is closed.

Step 5: Modding it so it thinks the tray is always closed

Depending on how your drive is setup, mine was pretty easy to manipulate the drive in thinking the drive was closed.  I folded a piece of paper up, and wedge it between the side of the drive and the latch so the latch was in the closed position at all times.

Step 6: Using the modded drive to read discs and rip the image

With the tray open, place a dvd movie that has a large TOC (table of contents), preferably ~8 gigs of information on the tray.

With the tray still open, slide the dvd-drive back into the laptop, and make sure the tray is slide all the way out.

The drive should start reading the dvd, and appear in My Computer.

Then open up WxRipper, click stop. (this will stop the dvd from spinning)

Replace the DVD movie with the Xbox 360 game, click spin on the program, and then click Find Magic Number.

Once it found the magic number, click Dump, create a file name, and it should start ripping the xbox 360 game.

HOPE THIS HAS HELPED AND GOOD LUCK!!!
