How To Extract/flash Tsh943 Ms28 Fm Using Mtkflash
« Reply #180 on: April 28, 2007, 08:02:00 PM »

this method worked great for me!  tried to do the unplug power on/off method with no luck at all.

i have an asus p4p800se motherboard with the intel ich5 chipset.

removed resistor, soldered in a switch
powered on the computer with switch off (took a very long time for the computer to boot)
turned the switch on right before running mtkflash, worked first try

also, when putting the drive back in the xbox, i left the switch turned on...

thanks!

SUCCESS!! finally jeez!!   I now know why people write their own tutorials everytime they flash this MS28 drive!!   it feels like you overcame a huge obsiticle!!

My setup and it goes with the person who started this thread!

Asus p4p800se on board ICH5 chipset!!

In the long run after sooooo many trial and errors I actually disconnected ALL drive except floppy from pc.

With this board and setup the drive MUST be seen by the bios before proceeding... for this to happen with the vcc trick the wires MUST be connected first!!!
if the wires are not connected the drive is not seen in bios and for me durring this process it would not work unless that happened.

the pc CANNOT be turned on first!   the xbox MUST be turned on first then the PC
otherwise bios just sits there trying to see the drive.

With me the drives center led constantly blinks when wires are disconnected.  some people say theirs does not blink when disconnected .. I dunno but mine does! or did that is smile.gif

ok here we go.  the time in this is critical!!  also the steps you take are also critical they must be followed to the t for this motherboard setup.  at least it was with me.

I know this is sounding familiar to alot of you!

I also installed a switch on the wires because it makes the process much easier to deal with also less likely to short out on the case if you make the wires long enough  for that not to happen.!!! this will hurt you drive if you short one of those wires.

1. wires must be connected on dvd drive.. sata connected power connected.
2. turn on xbox...
3. turn on pc... with mtkflash (no need for editing mtkflash for this chipset!!) on floppy (for me anyway)
4. bios sees drive when wires connected!
5. computer is now at dos prompt
6. before anything else turn xbox OFF NOT PC leave that alone.
7. disconnect wires (switch open)
8. type mtkflash r /m ms28.bin DO NOT HIT ENTER YET!
9. this is the critical timing thing.   for this board or me it was 2.0 - 3.5 seconds and thats about it!!
probably closer to 2.0 seconds ...2.2 whatever you will see it seems to be that picky for sure!!!

10.  now you are ready... turn on xbox... then 2.5 seconds later press enter on keyboard.

11. IF timed correctly mtkflash will ask for which number .. master/slave etc..etc.
IF mtkflash says drive not found.. you did not time it correctly.. period!   yes my center led is flashing this whole time. try try try try a million times again you will get it... no longer than 4 seconds for sure.. no faster than 2 I would say.

11.5 - if it says drive not found.. just turn off xbox... leaving wires disconnected..
type in mtkflash r /m ms28.bin do not hit enter!! turn on xbox 2.2-3.5 seconds press enter on pc
again drive not found repeat this process until it is.

12.  IF you ever time it right and get it to the part where mtkflash says 1, 2, etc etc..
CONNECT WIRES NOW... then press corresponding number for your drive!!

you should see it start reading!!
DONE!  and yes it loops like 4 times to 100% leave it be. until finished.

I heard of people or one person stating his froze while reading .. I would say maybe it was his floppy drive or floppy disk itself.  make sure there is enough room on it.. and try it again.

I used toolbox 1.0 to get the key ... flash a MS25 drive with this key and put it on the ms28 motherboard worked great!

hope this helps someone.

Yeah yeah, I know this thread is old but i just wanted to post my success about this MS28

I did the VCC method also since I have no patience when it comes to ordering parts online. This method is recommended only if you have good soldering skills, for example installing and removing RAM chips or the TSOP in an Xbox 1.

Anyway, it took me a couple tries with my brother's Intel ICH7 SATA PC, as in reading and remembering what the next step is constantly until I have it down-packed. At the end, I got my ms28 fully flashed with iXtreme 1.2c using an old 512 MB SD card and iPrep.

Now it seems easy to do.

Thanks for the walkthrough majik655  biggrin.gif

giving it back

a lot of people having a lot of problems with this one, me included.

but i've managed to crack it so thought i might aswell share my experience in the hope it will help someone else out.

1st, my setup, i use a abit NF7-S2G motherboard, i modified mtkflash to work with, team executor connectivity kit, bootable usb drive with Hack360 v3.2 USB software. And, i had to do the vcc mod, remove resistor r408 and replace with 2 wires.

i tried every combination on this thread and couldn't even get it to start to read the original firmware. you name it i tried it, external power supplies, using the 360 etc etc

then i got close. it started to read, but stopped at 0% and hung my pc and after a bit of mucking about i got it working properly ;o)

so heres the low down for my setup.

1. connect drive psu to connectivity kit and kit to sammy pcb. disconnect sata cable (very important) and seperate vcc wires (also very important)

2. switch on pc and allow to boot to dos using usb/floppy

3. connect sata cable to sammy pcb and join vcc wires together, choose option 1 on Hack360 v3.2 USB software, then press c to continue, and it will detect the sata controller and ask you for master or slave. wait, don't touch that keyboard yet

4. seperate the vcc wires, and wait 60 secs, don't know exactly how long u need to wait as a minimum, but i waited a minute, then reconnect the vcc wires, now select master and it reads instantly ;o)

5. when it's complete it asks you to reboot, not sure if you need to, but i did, jump back to step 1 and repeat, but choose option 2 to modify firmware, it patches your own firmware dump and then writes it back.
as a double check, you can do option 3 from main menu, which identifies the firmware on the drive by reading it back and verifying it, and you can do this straight after writing the modified firmware, now need for seperating wires etc.

6. solder a peice of wire or the original resistor if you can find it.

if this helps anyone or if anyone wants the modifed mtkflash that works with my motherboard email me and i'll forward it on. if your in the market for a new motherboard to do xbox360 mods i can fully recommend this board. does hitachis in windows no problem, even works with a usb to sata cable i have aswell, done 4 hitachis without a prob, except the v59 i fragged on tues with birdys buggered flash everything package. and done 3 sammys now, all must admit, this ms28 was a bitch though.

hello,

I'm late to the game but none the less here I am.  I have an old TS-H943 ms25 and Abit NF7-S2G motherboard.  How did you get the PC to boot from a USB flash drive?  I've been trying to search in bios settings and google but you are the closes I've come to.

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks.

This is not my work and is simply passed on as i successfully managed to do this! This is in my own words
however and would like to personally thank the people who made it possible!

I recently found out i had an Toshiba Samsung ms28 and mtkflash has problems reading or flashing these drives with the new revision. Luckily the lads at another well known forum helped out and now i wish to share what i have learned!

Error problem

IPB Image

You'll need to strip the dvd drive open and take the controller out!

You notice the big SST chip and just to the right is the vcc resistors, you must remove the resistor in the
middle as the pic below shows already done. Then you must connect a wire to either blue point and a wire
to the red point. You can purchase a simple on/off switch to make this operation better but is not required!
You can simply put the wire ends together when needed.

IPB Image

After doing this and you now have removed the resistor, attatched wires and maybe an on/off switch
should have something looking like this!

IPB Image

BACKING UP THE KEY AND MS28 FW!

Assuming your sata is detected and everything is working etc Boot into dos, but make sure your wires are
not connected to each other, or if using a switch it is turned off.  Go to where your mtkflash is and
type the command as you would usually for the normal method to backup the key but dont hit enter yet!

I.e Mtkflash r /m ms28.bin

Now either join the wires, or turn the switch on! hit enter on the keyboard and you should if done correct
see the ich5 channel or whatever sata port is used.  Hit the option for your drive and it should be now
successfully reading the drive and not giving the error as before!

FLASHING YOUR MS28 DRIVE

Word of caution here, KDX will not work with reading and injecting the key out of the file you backup!
You can hexedit the file you backed up and notice from the 4000 mark onwards is a c0 then followed by
your key which is followed by FF's. You can copy and paste the key into the xtreme firmwares you have
already be it the 1.2 or 2.0's and then flash the firmware as normal.

Dont worry about the hex editing! its important to get it correct of cause but your essentially doing the
exact same thing as KDX and copy pasting from the backed up file, to your xtreme.bin etc

Ok so once you have managed to hexedit the key into the xtreme.bin you can now reboot back into dos
making sure the wires were disconnected 1st and ready to redo the flashing stage same way as backing up.
You cannot boot up with the wires already in joined as the sata detection may cause a prob and wont detect it in dos or at the mtkflash stage!

Assuming you have got the wiring still correct and nothing moved out of place, you can now execute the command to flash! i.e mtkflash w /m xtreme.bin

Tools from maplins

1. 12w soldering iron £14.99
2. 30 gauge wire £1.14
3. On/off switch single pass through £1.30

Many thanks and happy to give back if this helps anyone!

enjoy this is confirmed working by me and others!

regards
xboxto
