1. wires must be connected on dvd drive.. sata connected power connected.
2. turn on xbox...
3. turn on pc... with mtkflash (no need for editing mtkflash for this chipset!!) on floppy (for me anyway)
4. bios sees drive when wires connected!
5. computer is now at dos prompt
6. before anything else turn xbox OFF NOT PC leave that alone.
7. disconnect wires (switch open)
8. type mtkflash r /m ms28.bin DO NOT HIT ENTER YET!
9. this is the critical timing thing. for this board or me it was 2.0 - 3.5 seconds and thats about it!!
probably closer to 2.0 seconds ...2.2 whatever you will see it seems to be that picky for sure!!!

10. now you are ready... turn on xbox... then 2.5 seconds later press enter on keyboard.

Reading works.
But how should i flash?
can i flash direktly after reading (with the hacked Key). Or Must i reboot the Xbox and do the same way again?

4.  Open xbox as per manual and remove power face plate so you can easily turn the Xbox on and off.

5.  Connect Xbox to power and TV.

6.  Connect SATA (internal) connection from PCI card to Xbox.

7.  Disconnect all other drives (hard drives, cd drives) IDE cables i PC.

8.  When you get a dos prompt type "mtkflash r /m /sata backups\1234567\12345\orig.bin".  Dont press enter!

9.  Press enter and turn on the xbox at the same time!

10.  At port selection menu switch off xbox.

11.  Select the port and wait ten seconds.  Power on xbox and the firmware should be read.

12.  When finished Unplug sata cable and turn off xbox.

13. At command prompt type "SAMREAD 1234567 12345" press enter and wait for the firmware to be patched.

14. Reboot PC with floppy drive.

15. At command prompt type "mtkflash w /m /sata backups\1234567\12345\hacked.bin" Dont press enter!

16.  Press enter and turn on the xbox at the same time!

17.  At port selection menu switch off xbox.

18.  Select the port and wait ten seconds.  Power on xbox and the firmware should be written.

19.  Disconnect from PC and rebuild xbox.

20.  Make lots of copies of the file orig.bin found on the floppy in the folder backups/1234567/12345/

This may seem long winded but it was the method that worked for me!

Good Luck!!

Hi, I have my new pc running now with the Intel ICH6 chipset so I can hopefully try flashing my xbox 360

drive but I have the samsung with the ms28 f/w and I wanted to know if it was possible to install the
firmware without messing around with soldering irons cuz i dont want it to break. I purchased a connectivity kit from a pc shop i know so will this enable me to do it without no hassle because I read on the one reply
that if you have the ms28 f/w you have to do it the soldering way. So can some kind soul give me some
much needed infomation? Please reply, thanks ohmy.gif

Ok, now iam here with my Story....

Id have used Wire Trick with an Asus P4C800E-Deluxe (ICH5)

First Attempt...Yeah works...dumped the Original without Probs.

So i were happy...edited the Firmware and get back to DOS for further flashing.

Start the same Way over and than it hangs up at 00%

Have read from one guy who has same Prob but he wrotes his Box is still working, mine...NO it doesnt.

So i have done every step in different ways Up and Down, no luck, try< to get a VIA Controller tomorrow.

Ive done about 40 Sam and Hit Drives since 360 is out, but this MS28 Thing really sucks.

I come to MTKs Menu, i can choose the Portnumber, the ni t starts with 00% but no further going.

One thing lets me think, it writes SST 25VF040 (Serial)

whats that, not the 360 Drive Chip from my point, thikned over and as is see i have had this also the Frist Flash Attempt, but why is the Bios Bad Flashed ?
Get no Error 65 or something else, 360 Drive didnt open and Laser didnt Spin up.

So for today enough for me, hope to get the VIA Controller tomorrow for BAD Flash Recovery without Wire Trick.

If anyone has an Idea whats getting wrong here, please Post.

BTW: have 2 PCs with Same Hardwareconfig, have also tried without additional Drives and so on....

so i tried the bad flash trick with the NTFSDOS cd(couldnt find any floppies, heh).  so anyway...

had the drive detected... did the samread command... it got up to the point where it says "reading... copying hacked firmware..." this is where it just froze...

i saw the video tutorial and knew it should only take a few seconds or so... so i rebooted and went to the next step like an idiot.

i figured it had copied everything fine.. just not registered(i know.. what kinda thinking is that?!)

so i did the samhack command after reboot... it got to 0% than said error.  ok.. i can live with that.. kinda was expecting that.

so i gave up for the night(4am at this point) and went to plug the 360 back into the tv...  well with the drive conencted to the 360 i get RED LIGHTS!!!!!  just one.. the bottom left corner flashes red.  ive yet to fully hook it back up to my TV.. so ive yet to see which error it posts.

so my question to all of you is... since the f/w dump froze at "copying hacked firmware".. is my original firmware safe somewhere?!  is orig.bin copied to XBF folder prior to copying hacked firmware?

why exactly am i getting an error?  if samhack stopped at 0% due to an error.. is that stopping too late?  is this what caused the error?

if my orig.bin isnt recoverable... what are the next steps i should take to maybe hoping to get my drive key?  is there a chip i can solder on to bypass this issue?

im usually good with this stuff but the 4am + being impatient were two poor moves on my part  sad.gif

SUCCESS!! finally jeez!!   I now know why people write their own tutorials everytime they flash this MS28 drive!!   it feels like you overcame a huge obsiticle!!

My setup and it goes with the person who started this thread!

Asus p4p800se on board ICH5 chipset!!

In the long run after sooooo many trial and errors I actually disconnected ALL drive except floppy from pc.

With this board and setup the drive MUST be seen by the bios before proceeding... for this to happen with the vcc trick the wires MUST be connected first!!!
if the wires are not connected the drive is not seen in bios and for me durring this process it would not work unless that happened.

the pc CANNOT be turned on first!   the xbox MUST be turned on first then the PC
otherwise bios just sits there trying to see the drive.

With me the drives center led constantly blinks when wires are disconnected.  some people say theirs does not blink when disconnected .. I dunno but mine does! or did that is smile.gif

ok here we go.  the time in this is critical!!  also the steps you take are also critical they must be followed to the t for this motherboard setup.  at least it was with me.

I know this is sounding familiar to alot of you!

I also installed a switch on the wires because it makes the process much easier to deal with also less likely to short out on the case if you make the wires long enough  for that not to happen.!!! this will hurt you drive if you short one of those wires.

1. wires must be connected on dvd drive.. sata connected power connected.
2. turn on xbox...
3. turn on pc... with mtkflash (no need for editing mtkflash for this chipset!!) on floppy (for me anyway)
4. bios sees drive when wires connected!
5. computer is now at dos prompt
6. before anything else turn xbox OFF NOT PC leave that alone.
7. disconnect wires (switch open)
8. type mtkflash r /m ms28.bin DO NOT HIT ENTER YET!
9. this is the critical timing thing.   for this board or me it was 2.0 - 3.5 seconds and thats about it!!
probably closer to 2.0 seconds ...2.2 whatever you will see it seems to be that picky for sure!!!

10.  now you are ready... turn on xbox... then 2.5 seconds later press enter on keyboard.

11. IF timed correctly mtkflash will ask for which number .. master/slave etc..etc.
IF mtkflash says drive not found.. you did not time it correctly.. period!   yes my center led is flashing this whole time. try try try try a million times again you will get it... no longer than 4 seconds for sure.. no faster than 2 I would say.

11.5 - if it says drive not found.. just turn off xbox... leaving wires disconnected..
type in mtkflash r /m ms28.bin do not hit enter!! turn on xbox 2.2-3.5 seconds press enter on pc
again drive not found repeat this process until it is.

12.  IF you ever time it right and get it to the part where mtkflash says 1, 2, etc etc..
CONNECT WIRES NOW... then press corresponding number for your drive!!

you should see it start reading!!
DONE!  and yes it loops like 4 times to 100% leave it be. until finished.

I heard of people or one person stating his froze while reading .. I would say maybe it was his floppy drive or floppy disk itself.  make sure there is enough room on it.. and try it again.

I used toolbox 1.0 to get the key ... flash a MS25 drive with this key and put it on the ms28 motherboard worked great!

hope this helps someone.

If you have use doskey then it is prertty easy with the timing smile.gif

I had a good deal of problems geting this ms=28 to work for my customer, but i found the power it on, then off and back on as you press the # for the drive worked, took me about 5 trys (with out rebooting, im going to do it a 2nd time and compair and compair the keys).

any way a quick break down of what i did

1st the hardware

Asus K8V = SE delux (worked great for hitichi, but the ms=25 i had to do a bios update)
and ofcourse the ms 28

Since my bios dont like the xbox 360 drives (it hangs while loading) i turn my pc on and wait for the c:\ prompt, then boot the xbox 360.

I booted off a usb flash drive for the x360sam program v 0.6

i did samread 1234 1234  (for easyer to get it started) and hit enter

it listed the drive as it always does when it is powered on (its #3 in my case)

i turn the 360 off, then i got set up to hit 3 on the #pad (with numlock on)

right when i pressed the power button on the 360 i hit enter (about the exact same time, maybe a extreamly little delay, less than 1/10 of a sec). It went right into reading and boom it was done.

Its the same methiod some one else posted but dont remember the name.

I have finally flashed every drive but the hitachi 57 >.< i hope them are ezer lol.

Good Luck flashing every one,

sis964 chip here and the same no luck with the ms28 with all methods even the vcc (resistor remove) non worked , i did a few drives of all types , but no luck with this nasty one (ms28) , the only way that worked for me is by desoldering the chip , reading patching and writing on external professional hardware  and sticking it back in , but i almost got it trashed , since removing the black (shitty) thing made me almost damage the board , and i had to spend 10 hours fixing the bad traces , ill never do that again no matter what , and i dont recommend it to any one , ah and i forgot to mention that i got the chip damaged too  , but i (miraculously ) got the key out of it , and replaced it with another new one after flashing it.

majik655 YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
this worked perfectly for me for the ms28 drive
timing was around 2 seconds...
i was trying 10 sec bad flash whatever method and gave up (ECS 865G-M8 mobo with ICH5 sata onboard controller)
i liked this method because i did not have to restart and try again if it did not detect the drive channels (master1/slave2)

now last question... do i leave the 2 soldered wires connected or disconnected to play my games now?
thanks a ton
